Jesus’ Call for Discernment in Today’s Chaos Part 2

He spoke to the crowds. “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you instantly say, ‘A shower is coming.’ And it turns out that way. You feel a south wind blowing. You say, ‘It will be a hot day.’ And it turns out that way. You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky. But how do you fail to analyze this current time (Luke 12:54-56)?

In part 1, I shared the importance of discernment during this time of national chaos. In this post I want to share lessons we can learn from Luke 12:54-56 about discerning the times. I hope you will recognize how crucial it is to see the urgency of our time. We must learn to walk circumspectly as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-17 says, “So then, be careful how you walk. Do not be unwise people. Instead, be wise, making the most of your time. The days are evil.” Thus, do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is“.

Lessons for Today

The message of Luke 12:54-56 remains highly relevant in our contemporary context. We live in an age of information overload, misinformation and disinformation, rapid change is constant. The ability to discern and interpret the times is more critical than ever. Here are some key lessons we can draw from this passage:

1. Cultivate Spiritual Awareness

We live in a world where distractions are abundant, and it is easy to become spiritually complacent. Jesus’ words remind us of the importance of staying spiritually alert and aware. This involves regular prayer, meditation on the Scriptures, and being open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

2. Understand the Signs of the Times

Jesus called the crowd to recognize the signs of their time. Similarly, we are called to understand the cultural, social, and moral shifts happening around us. This includes being aware of the challenges and opportunities that arise. We must discern how we can respond in ways that align with God’s will.

3. Avoid Hypocrisy

Jesus’ rebuke of hypocrisy highlights the danger of outward religiosity without inward transformation. We are called to live lives of integrity, where our actions align with our faith. This means being honest about our struggles. It involves seeking genuine spiritual growth. We must avoid the trap of performing religious duties for appearance’s sake.

4. Seek Wisdom and Understanding

Discernment requires wisdom, which comes from a deep relationship with God and a commitment to learning and growth. We are encouraged to seek wisdom through prayer, study, and fellowship with other believers. This wisdom helps us navigate complex situations and make decisions that honor God.

5. Respond to God’s Movement

Ultimately, discerning the times leads to action. Recognizing God’s movement in our lives and the world should prompt us to respond faithfully. This involves acts of service, advocacy for justice, sharing the Gospel, or simply being a light in our communities.

Conclusion

Luke 12:54-56 challenges us to be discerning individuals who can interpret the signs of the times with spiritual insight. Jesus’ rebuke of the crowd underscores the importance of being spiritually aware and responsive to God’s work in our midst. As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, let us strive to cultivate a deep sense of discernment. Let us also live out our faith with authenticity and wisdom.

This passage is a call to action for all believers. It urges us to look beyond the obvious. We should seek a deeper understanding of God’s presence and purpose in our lives. By doing so, we can better navigate the challenges we face and make meaningful contributions to the Kingdom of God.

Christ wants people to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Scripture tells us that wisdom is better than gold! As Christians, we can gain knowledge through the study of God’s word. During this time of national chaos, I pray that you be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. I also pray that you gain all spiritual wisdom. James 3:17 says, “…the wisdom from above is first pure. It is then peaceable, gentle, and open to reason. It is full of mercy and good fruits. It is impartial and sincere”. I also pray that you will have understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. Strive to please Him in all respects. Bear fruit in every good work and increase in the knowledge of God. Be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious is power. This will help you persevere in patience. Joyously give thanks to the Father. He has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light (Col. 1:9-15).

Blessings,

Minister A. Francine Green
