Lest We Forget: A Reflection: Remembering Our Faith

“Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief. You will not know what hour I will come upon you” (Rev. 3:3).

We are consistently reminded throughout the Bible. It emphasizes the importance of remembering our faith. We should also remember the teachings that God has bestowed upon us. The phrase “lest we forget” resonates profoundly within several scripture passages. It urges us to keep the divine wisdom at the forefront of our lives.

Deuteronomy 6:12

In Deuteronomy 6:12, we are admonished. “Then beware lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” He delivered you from the house of bondage. This verse calls us to remember the deliverance from slavery and the miracles that accompanied the journey to freedom. Forgetting these mighty works of God leads to complacency and a departure from His ways.

Psalm 78:7

Psalm 78:7 reinforces the theme. It states, “That they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God.” It also urges them to keep His commandments. Here, the psalmist emphasizes the importance of instilling hope in God through remembrance. By recalling God’s deeds, we are encouraged to remain steadfast in our obedience and trust in His plan.

2 Kings 17:38

2 Kings 17:38 warns, “The covenant that I have made with you, do not forget. Do not fear other gods.” This verse highlights the significance of the covenant and the exclusive devotion owed to the Lord. Forgetting the covenant can lead to idolatry and the worship of false gods, jeopardizing our spiritual integrity.

Revelation 3:3

Revelation 3:3 offers a solemn reminder: “Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief. You will not know what hour I will come upon you.” The urgency in this verse underscores the necessity of vigilance and repentance. It is a call to remember the teachings and to adhere to them diligently, lest we face unexpected consequences.

Conclusion

The biblical exhortation “lest we forget” is a powerful reminder. It encourages us to keep the divine teachings and acts of God ever visible in our minds. By doing so, we fortify our faith. We hold our spiritual direction. We make sure that we walk closely with the Lord. In this constant remembrance, we find strength, guidance, and the promise of eternal life. Let us always strive to remember and uphold the sacred wisdom imparted to us through these scriptures.

To God be the glory forever and ever! Amen.
