If the Foundations Be Destroyed, What Can the Righteous Do? Psalm 11:1-7

If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do” (Ps. 11:3)?

Psalm 11:1-7

The ancient words of Psalm 11:1-7 pose a profound question. The psalmist asks, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” This query resonates deeply, not only in the context of the psalm’s time. It also resonates in our modern era, where the stability and integrity of societal foundations are perpetually called into question.

Seeking Refuge in the Lord

The psalm begins with a powerful declaration of trust in God: “In the Lord I take refuge.” Despite the crumbling foundations around him, the psalmist asserts his unwavering faith in the Divine Protector. This opening verse sets the tone for the entire passage. It reminds the righteous that their ultimate refuge is not found in human institutions or constructs. Instead, it is found in the steadfast love and protection of God.

The Challenge of Shaken Foundations

The destruction of foundations, whether moral, ethical, or societal, poses a significant challenge to the righteous. It is in these moments of upheaval that the righteous are called to examine their faith and resolve. The psalmist’s question is a lament. It also serves as a call to action. What can the righteous do in the face of such adversity?

Responding with Faith and Integrity

In response to this pressing question, the psalm offers a framework of faith and integrity. The righteous are encouraged to keep their trust in the Lord, even when the visible structures around them falter. It is an invitation to stand firm in their principles. They are encouraged to uphold justice and righteousness. They should be beacons of hope and light in a darkened world.

The Lord’s Sovereignty and Justice

The psalmist reassures the righteous of God’s sovereignty and justice. “The Lord is in his holy temple.” “The Lord is on his heavenly throne.” These verses affirm that despite the chaos and destruction, God remains in control. He observes all human actions and will ultimately dispense justice, rewarding the righteous and condemning the wicked.

Conclusion

Psalm 11:1-7 presents a timeless message of resilience and faith. When the foundations are destroyed, the righteous are called to deepen their trust in God. They must act with integrity and remember that the Divine Protector is ever-watchful and just. In moments of uncertainty, this psalm serves as both a solace and a guide. It urges the faithful to hold fast to their beliefs. It encourages them to seek refuge in the unwavering love of the Lord.

To God be the glory forever and ever! Amen
