“So God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God, he created them. He created them male and female (Genesis 1:27).”
Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Christian Context
The acronym DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. It can be interpreted through a biblical lens. The Bible affirms both diversity and the need for justice and fairness. Some view DEI in a secular way, rooted in critical theory. Nonetheless, Christians can still engage with DEI concepts. They can focus on biblical principles of inclusion, fairness, and the celebration of God’s diverse creation.
Diversity
The Bible acknowledges the diversity of God’s creation, including the diversity of people from all tribes and nations. It also emphasizes the diversity of gifts and talents within the body of Christ. This acknowledgment can be seen in scriptures like:
- Genesis 1:27: “So God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God, he created them. He created them male and female.”
- Revelation 7:9: “After this I looked. There before me was a great multitude that no one can count. They were from every nation, tribe, people, and language. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-5: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.”
Equity
The Bible calls for justice and fairness, ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and dignity. This includes challenging systemic injustices and promoting equality of opportunity, as shown through:
- Isaiah 1:17: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”
- Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD ask of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
- James 2:1-4: “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.”
Inclusion
The Bible promotes a sense of belonging and welcomes all people, regardless of their background. It emphasizes the importance of loving and supporting others, especially those who are marginalized or excluded, illustrated by:
- Romans 15:7: “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, to bring praise to God.”
- Luke 14:13-14: “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. You will be blessed.”
- Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile. Neither slave nor free. Nor is there male and female. You are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Biblical Examples and Principles
God’s Creation
Genesis 1:27 describes humanity as created in God’s image, emphasizing the inherent value and dignity of all people.
The Great Commission
Jesus’s call to make disciples of all nations reflects a commitment to inclusivity and evangelism.
Equality of All Believers
Galatians 3:28 emphasizes the equality of all believers in Christ, regardless of race, social status, or gender.
Addressing Inequity
Acts 6:1-7 shows the early church addressing concerns about inequitable food distribution and appointing leaders to guarantee fairness.
Important Considerations
Balancing DEI and Meritocracy
The Bible calls for both justice and fairness but also recognizes the importance of hard work and qualifications.
Avoiding Idolatry
Christians should make sure that their ultimate allegiance is to Christ, not to cultural trends or human approval.
True DEI
True DEI focuses on biblical values of love, justice, and inclusion, while upholding merit and responsibility.
By focusing on these biblical principles, Christians can engage with DEI concepts in ways that align with their faith. This approach promotes a more inclusive and just society. It also celebrates the diversity of God’s creation.
I pray that your journey be blessed with wisdom and grace.
