Matthew 24:12 states, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” This verse was spoken by Jesus during His discourse on the Mount of Olives. It is part of a larger prophecy regarding the end times. These are the signs that would precede His second coming and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom on earth.

Wickedness and Its Consequences

It encompasses agape—selfless, sacrificial love that mirrors God’s own love for humanity; philia—brotherly affection and friendship; and storge—familial love. Jesus emphasized that love is the greatest commandment. He urged His followers to love God with all their hearts. He also taught them to love their neighbors as themselves. Yet, the prophecy in Matthew 24:12 highlights a tragic reversal: a world increasingly devoid of this divine and human connection. 

Reflection on Modern Times 

Many believers see the signs of Matthew 24:12 manifesting in today’s world. The rise of global conflicts, social injustices, and moral relativism are stark indicators of increasing wickedness. Alongside these developments is a noticeable decline in the quality of human relationships. Isolation, alienation, and a loss of community are pervasive issues, exacerbated by technology and the digital age. 

Love in the Age of Technology 

While technology has undoubtedly connected us in unprecedented ways, it has also contributed to the erosion of deep, meaningful interactions. Social media platforms, while offering a facade of connection, often foster superficial engagements, jealousy, and a sense of inadequacy. The instant gratification culture has diminished patience and the willingness to invest in long-term, committed relationships.

Jesus’s life and teachings provide a roadmap for maintaining love in a world where it is under threat. His emphasis on forgiveness, selflessness, and unconditional love serves as a powerful countermeasure to the coldness prophesied in Matthew 24:12. By emulating His example, believers can keep their hearts warm and their love alive.

Building and sustaining communities where love is actively practiced is crucial. Regular fellowship, acts of service, and communal worship reinforce the bonds of love and counteract the isolation that breeds coldness. Encouraging open, honest communication and prioritizing relationships help in maintaining the warmth of love. 

Resist the Temptations of Wickedness 

The battle against wickedness is both external and internal. It requires vigilance in recognizing and resisting the temptations that lead to moral decay. Engaging in regular self-examination, prayer, and seeking accountability can fortify one’s resolve to live righteously.
