“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark :15)
A message of repentance, faith, and a kingdom not of this world
Jesus came to Galilee with a life-changing message. He proclaimed the Good News that the kingdom of God had come to earth. This came through His very person, the Son of God. This was not merely an announcement. It was an invitation. It called for humanity to turn from sin. It urged people to embrace the truth by repenting and believing in the gospel. It was a message both profound and revolutionary, one that echoed through His words, His actions, and ultimately, His sacrifice.
The Kingdom of God Comes Near
Jesus’ arrival in Galilee marked the beginning of His ministry, a mission rooted in the proclamation of God’s kingdom. He said, “The time is fulfilled.” He also stated, “The kingdom of God is at hand.” Therefore, “Repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). These words signified that the long-awaited promises of God were being fulfilled. They were not fulfilled in a distant or abstract manner. Instead, they came to life in a tangible reality through Him. He was the embodiment of God’s reign among men, offering a glimpse of divine grace and truth.
The kingdom Jesus spoke of was unlike any earthly dominion. It was not defined by borders or armies. Instead, it was defined by the rule of God in the hearts of those who accepted His message. It was a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. These values stood in stark contrast to the temporal and often corrupt kingdoms of the world.
A Kingdom Not of This World
In His dialogue with Pilate, Jesus clarified the nature of His kingdom. When questioned about His authority, He responded, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight to prevent My handover to the Jews. But as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm” (John 18:36). These words underscore the spiritual essence of His mission. Jesus was not here to claim political power or overthrow governments; His purpose transcended earthly ambitions.
By stating that His kingdom was “not of this world,” Jesus affirmed that His reign was founded on heavenly principles. His kingdom operates in the sphere of faith, love, and obedience to God. It is a kingdom that transforms individuals from within, fostering a relationship with the Creator that leads to eternal life.
The Call to Repentance and Faith
Central to Jesus’ proclamation was the call to repentance. He urged people to turn away from sin and align themselves with God’s will. Repentance was not merely a change of behavior but a transformation of heart and mind. It required humility, the recognition of one’s need for God, and a willingness to embrace His grace.
Faith, too, was essential. To believe in the gospel meant to trust in Jesus—His teachings, His miracles, and ultimately, His sacrifice on the cross. It was an act of surrender. This meant acknowledging that salvation could not be earned. It was a gift freely given by God through His Son.
A Message for All Generations
The Good News that Jesus proclaimed in Galilee continues to resonate today. His message of repentance and faith is timeless, offering hope and redemption to every generation. The truth of God’s kingdom challenges us. It encourages us to live not for the fleeting pursuits of this world. Instead, we should live for the eternal purposes of heaven.
As followers of Christ, we are called to embody the principles of His kingdom. We are to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. In doing so, we become witnesses to the reality of His reign. We shine as lights in a world often overshadowed by darkness.
Conclusion
Jesus’ proclamation in Galilee was more than an announcement. It was an invitation to experience the life-changing power of God’s kingdom. His words, “My kingdom is not of this world,” remind us that His reign is spiritual. It is also eternal and rooted in divine truth. Through repentance and faith, He invites us to become citizens of this kingdom. We are encouraged to live lives that reflect His glory and grace. May we hear His call. Let us respond with open hearts. We should carry the message of His Good News to others. Just as He carried it to Galilee so many years ago.
May the love of God shine through us, bringing hope, healing, and transformation to those around us. Amen.
