Taking God Seriously

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (Jn. 4:15).

Taking God Seriously: A Path to Spiritual Fulfillment

A serious approach to God involves profound respect. It requires a commitment to live in line with His will, teachings, and promises as revealed in scripture. It is not merely about belief. It is a life-changing way of life. It integrates faith into every thought, word, and action. Here is a closer look at what it means to take God seriously:

Understanding and Acting on God’s Word

Scripture as a Guide: Taking God seriously begins with treating His Word, the Bible, as a reliable and life-shaping guide. This involves dedicating time to study scripture. It also means meditating on it, seeking to uncover its truths. You can then apply this wisdom to daily life.

Living According to the Light: It involves living authentically. This is done by applying the knowledge and understanding one gains from God’s Word. This requires a commitment to continual spiritual growth and the humility to adjust one’s path in alignment with scripture.

Fearing God’s Commandments: A reverential fear of God is an integral part of taking Him seriously. This fear is not rooted in terror. It is founded in awe and respect for God’s authority. This respect leads to a heartfelt desire to obey His commandments.

Practical Application of God’s Principles

Living a Life of Faith: Faith is not passive; it is an active, trusting relationship with God. Taking His teachings seriously means responding with intellectual understanding. It also requires a willingness to follow His will. This is demonstrated by a life of faith.

Seeking to Know and Understand God’s Character: To take God seriously, one must seek to understand His nature. This includes His love, mercy, justice, and holiness. This knowledge fosters a deeper connection and alignment with His plan for humanity.

Living a Life That Reflects God’s Love: Actions speak louder than words. Taking God seriously is shown by reflecting His love through kindness. We demonstrate compassion and serve others, following the example set by Jesus.

Submitting to God’s Authority: It also means recognizing God’s sovereign authority. It involves willingly submitting one’s will to His, even in moments of personal struggle or sacrifice.

Examples of Taking God Seriously

Prayer and Seeking Guidance: Regular prayer is a critical practice for those who take God seriously. It reflects dependence on Him and a willingness to seek His wisdom in decision-making.

Living a Life of Service: Use your talents and resources to serve others. This advances God’s Kingdom. It is a tangible way to honor Him. You can make a difference in the world this way.

Seeking to Make Christ Known: Taking God seriously involves sharing His love with others. We fulfill the Great Commission by making Christ’s teachings known. Romans 11:36 reminds us that everything exists for His glory.

Following Jesus’ Footsteps: Emulating the life and teachings of Jesus is a hallmark of taking God seriously. This involves striving to live with humility, love, and integrity, as He did.

Why Taking God Seriously Matters

Transformative Power: A life centered on God is life-changing. It brings joy, purpose, and a sense of belonging as one deepens their relationship with the Creator.

Spiritual Growth: Taking God seriously fosters spiritual growth. It enables one to mature in faith, understanding, and character, drawing closer to God’s design for their life.

Eternal Perspective: Understanding life through an eternal lens helps prioritize what truly matters. By taking God seriously, one can prepare for eternity and live with a sense of purpose and hope.

Reflection

As we reflect on what it means to take God seriously, we remember that this is not a one-time decision. It involves ongoing contemplation. It is a lifelong journey. It is an ongoing process of surrender, growth, and alignment with His will. To take God seriously is to place Him at the center of our lives. His wisdom guides our choices. His love shapes our interactions. His promises sustain our hope.

Let us ask ourselves: Are we truly taking God seriously in every area of our lives? Are we growing in our understanding of His Word? Are we applying His principles? Are we reflecting His love to the world around us? May this reflection inspire us to deepen our commitment to living a life that honors God in every word. Let it motivate us through every action and decision. When we take Him seriously, we discover the fullness of life He intends for us. This includes immeasurable joy, purpose, and a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Blessings,

Minister A. Francine Green
