The Work of Grace

A Layman’s Perspective

The Work of Grace is truly a beautiful, transformative concept in the Christian faith. It is about God’s gift of salvation and eternal life, something we could never earn, but are blessed to receive through His love and mercy.

Healing and Renewal

In John 5:11, a man healed by Jesus tells others, “He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed and walk.” This miracle demonstrates the power of grace. The man didn’t earn healing through his actions—Jesus simply made him whole out of compassion. Similarly, grace works in our lives, healing what is broken and giving us new strength to move forward, just as the man was told to take up his bed and walk.

Eternal Life as a Gift

In 1 John 5:11, we read, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” This verse reminds us that eternal life is a gift from God, not something we “earn” by being good or doing good works. It’s like receiving an unexpected present that you didn’t know you needed but that changes your life forever. All we have to do is accept this incredible gift.

Where Eternal Life Comes From

The verse also makes it clear that eternal life is found in Jesus Christ. He is the source, the way, and the means by which we receive this precious gift. Just as water flows from a spring, eternal life flows from Jesus. By believing in Him, we open our hearts to the life He offers us.

The Testimony of Salvation

The word “testimony” used in the verse is important. It’s like a declaration that this truth about God and His Son is undeniable. It gives believers confidence and assurance that they already possess eternal life because of their faith in Jesus. God’s promise is unwavering, and this testimony is a reminder that His grace is real and reliable.

Faith in Jesus: The Key to Life

In the next verse, 1 John 5:12, the message becomes even clearer: “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” This means that having faith in Jesus is essential. Just like a key unlocks a door, faith in Jesus unlocks eternal life. Without Him, we remain separated from this gift, but with Him, we are connected to the life God has promised.

Living in Grace

The Work of Grace isn’t just about receiving eternal life—it’s about living it. When we accept this gift, we are called to walk in it, just like the healed man who took up his bed and walked. Grace inspires us to live with faith, hope, and love, sharing the goodness of God with others and trusting Him through every step of our journey.

Conclusion

The Work of Grace is God’s loving action in our lives. It heals, renews, and connects us to eternal life through Jesus Christ. It’s not something we earn, but something we humbly accept. And once we do, it transforms everything, giving us the strength to walk forward in faith and the assurance that God’s promises are true.

May the love of God shine through us, bringing hope, healing, and transformation to those around us. Amen.
