Drawing Near to God: A Personal Reflection

In life’s hustle and bustle, it is easy to feel distant from the divine. Yet, the words from James 4:8, “Come close to God and He will come close to you,” resonate deeply. They remind us that the Creator longs for a genuine connection with us. But what does it really mean to draw near to God? For me, it has been a journey of discovery. It is a process of letting go and leaning in. I am living out my faith in tangible ways.

Understanding Intimacy with God

When I first heard the phrase “draw near to God” I realized something important. Drawing near is not about geography. It’s about the heart. It means cultivating a spiritual closeness, a relationship rooted in trust, love, and daily surrender. Like a dear friend or a loved one, God desires consistent communication and openness from us.

Steps I’ve Taken to Draw Near

1. Embracing Prayer and Scripture

Prayer has become my lifeline—no longer just a ritual, but an ongoing conversation with God. Whether in moments of joy or struggle, I’ve learned to pour my heart out to Him, knowing that He listens. Alongside prayer, diving into Scripture has illuminated God’s character and promises. It’s through His Word that I’ve found wisdom, comfort, and direction for life’s complexities.

2. Living Out Faith and Obedience

Faith is more than belief; it’s action. I’ve challenged myself to embody Christ’s teachings by serving others and striving for kindness, even when it’s inconvenient. Obedience has taught me the beauty of trusting God’s plan. It can be difficult at times. This trust comes even when it doesn’t align with my own timeline or expectations.

3. Practicing Humility and Reflection

James 4:8 also calls us to “cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts.” This has been a humbling process for me. I am acknowledging my flaws. I am repenting for my wrongs. I am seeking a heart aligned with God’s will. True closeness with Him begins with honesty, both about who I am and who I am becoming through His grace.

4. Worship and Fellowship

Worship has been a powerful avenue for drawing near to God. Whether in a community of believers or in the quiet of my home, I lift my heart in praise. This reminds me of His greatness. It draws me closer to His presence. Fellowship, too, has been invaluable. Sharing faith with others has strengthened my own faith. It reminded me that I am not walking this path alone.

5. Gratitude as a Daily Practice

Gratitude has transformed my perspective. By choosing to focus on God’s blessings, I’ve discovered joy even in challenging seasons. Thanking God for His faithfulness has deepened my trust in Him and reminded me of His unchanging goodness.

6. Resisting Temptation and Leaning on His Strength

The journey of faith isn’t without obstacles. Temptations and doubts have tried to pull me away. Learning to resist them by submitting to God’s wisdom has been life changing. I’ve realized that His strength is made perfect in my weakness, and leaning on Him allows me to stand firm.

The Beauty of His Promise

The promise in James 4:8 continues to amaze me. When we draw near to God, He draws near to us. This isn’t a one-sided effort; it’s a divine dance of grace and love. In my moments of seeking, I’ve felt His presence in ways that have left me in awe. It has been through the kindness of others, the stillness of prayer, and the peace that surpasses understanding.

A Prayer to Draw Near to God

Dear God,

Thank You for always being close, even when I don’t always feel it. Help me to quiet my heart and open my mind to Your presence. Teach me to trust You more and to seek You in all that I do. Let me feel Your peace and love, and guide me closer to You each day. Amen.

Conclusion

Drawing near to God is not a destination but a journey—a daily commitment to seek, trust, and grow. Through these intentional steps, I’ve come to know His heart more deeply. I also experience His love more fully. Wherever you are in your spiritual walk, remember this: God is always near. He is waiting with open arms for you to take that first step toward Him. And when you do, you’ll find that He has been drawing near to you all along.

Blessing,

Minister A. Francine Green
