Understanding the Call to Awaken
“For anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:14)
The Bible repeatedly calls us to awaken—not just physically, but spiritually. It reminds us that the time has come to open our eyes to what God is revealing. In Romans 13:11 (NIV), we are told, “The time is now to awake out of sleep: for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.” This is a powerful reminder that we live in a moment filled with purpose, urgency, and divine promise.
Jesus Speaks Through Revelation
In the Book of Revelation, Jesus sends a vision to John, his apostle. He instructs John to write down what he sees. This vision contained symbolic imagery, showing what is to come and what is taking place now. John heard a voice. It was as loud and clear as a trumpet. The voice said, “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches” (Revelation 1:10-11 NIV).
What Did John See?
John describes an awe-inspiring image of Jesus Christ:
· He stood among seven golden lampstands, symbolizing the seven churches.
· He wore a long robe with a golden sash around His chest.
· His hair was as white as wool or snow, and His eyes burned like fiery flames.
· His feet glowed like bronze in a furnace, and His voice roared like rushing waters.
· He held seven stars in His right hand, and a sharp, double-edged sword came from His mouth.
· His face shone brilliantly like the sun.
This magnificent vision left John trembling, but Jesus comforted him with these words: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now I am alive forever and ever!” (Revelation 1:17-18 NIV). What an incredible glimpse into the glory of Christ and His power over death and life.
The Mystery of the Seven Stars and Lampstands
Jesus explained to John that the stars represented the angels of the seven churches. The lampstands symbolized the churches themselves. This imagery points to Jesus as the light of the world, standing among His people and guiding them.
Visions Throughout Scripture
John’s vision is not the only time God has shown His glory to humanity. Daniel saw something similar in his dream. In his vision, he witnessed “one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven” (Daniel 7:13 NIV). This figure was given everlasting dominion, glory, and kingship. Likewise, Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us that God has spoken through prophets in the past. Now, He speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ.
A Personal Reflection
What would you do if you saw Jesus standing before you in all His splendor? Would you fall to your knees like John? Would you cry out like Isaiah, who declared God’s eternal sovereignty (Isaiah 46:9-10)? These moments of divine revelation remind us that Jesus is coming soon—and we must be ready.
A Call to Prayer
As we prepare for Jesus’ return, prayer is our strongest connection to God. Here’s a prayer to help align your heart with His purpose:
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you for the spiritual awakening you offer to all who seek you. Guide us through the Holy Spirit. Help us understand your vision for our lives. Give us wisdom to walk in your ways. Teach us to pray, to listen, and to live according to your word. Amen.
In these times, let us remain awake, alert, and ready to embrace the glorious revelations God has for us.
