Six days before the Jewish festival of Passover, Jesus visited the village of Bethany. This wasn’t just any place—it was home to Lazarus, the man Jesus had miraculously raised from the dead. To honor Jesus, a special dinner was held. Lazarus was there, sitting at the table with Jesus, and Martha, Lazarus’s sister, was busy serving the meal.
During the dinner, something extraordinary happened. Mary, the other sister of Lazarus, brought out a pint of pure nard, a rare and very expensive perfume. She did not keep it for herself. Instead, she poured it on Jesus’ feet. This act showed her deep love, respect, and devotion. Then, in a humble and personal act, she used her own hair to wipe his feet. The fragrance of the perfume filled the entire house, creating a moment of beauty and significance.
Not everyone appreciated Mary’s gesture. Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples, complained. He thought the perfume should have been sold. The money could then have been given to the poor. He pointed out that the perfume was worth an entire year’s wages. Now, Judas wasn’t being generous—he was known to steal from the money bag he managed for the group. He saw this as a wasted opportunity for personal gain.
But Jesus defended Mary. He explained that her act wasn’t wasteful; it was a preparation for his burial, which was soon to come. Jesus also reminded everyone that the poor will always be present and in need. Nevertheless, his time with them was limited. This moment of anointing was special and unique.
So why does this story matter?
1. Mary’s Expression of Love: Mary’s act shows what true devotion looks like. She gave what was likely her most valuable possession to honor Jesus, not holding back in her love and worship.
2. Foreshadowing Jesus’ Sacrifice: Jesus linked Mary’s anointing to his upcoming death. He reminded everyone that his mission on Earth was heading toward its ultimate purpose—his sacrifice for humanity.
3. Priorities in Worship: Jesus’ response to Judas teaches us that acts of love and devotion have profound value. Caring for others is essential, but there are moments when honoring and focusing on Jesus takes precedence.
4. Faith over Criticism: Mary’s boldness to act in such a heartfelt way is a reminder to remain steadfast. She maintained faith and devotion despite criticism from others. Even when others don’t understand or support it, keep your faith.
This event also highlights the growing tension around Jesus. People were flocking to see him—and Lazarus, the man he brought back to life. This situation made the religious leaders plot even more against Jesus. They also plotted against Lazarus as more people were turning to believe in Jesus.
The anointing at Bethany is a powerful story of love, sacrifice, and priorities. It encourages us to reflect on how we honor what is truly important. We should remain faithful when faced with criticism or misunderstanding.
