Understanding Philippians 2:7
We’re diving into a key aspect of Christian faith when we talk about Jesus as the Son of Man. This truth is both awe-inspiring and deeply humbling. Philippians 2:7 tells us about Christ “emptying himself” and taking on human form. But what does this mean in simpler terms?
Jesus Emptied Himself
The phrase “he emptied himself” doesn’t mean Jesus stopped being God. Instead, it describes how he chose to set aside his divine rights and privileges while living on earth. Imagine a king choosing to live as a commoner. He does this not because he stops being royalty. He willingly takes on a simpler role for a greater purpose. This act of self-limitation is known as “Kenosis,” a Greek word that captures this profound decision.
Fully Human, Fully Reliant on the Holy Spirit
While on earth, Jesus wasn’t omniscient (knowing everything), omnipotent (all-powerful), or omnipresent (everywhere at once) like God in heaven is. He lived within the limitations of being human—dependent on the Holy Spirit for guidance and supernatural power. Every miracle he performed, every teaching he gave, was done through the Spirit’s enabling power. This reveals an incredible truth. Jesus lived as a man totally reliant on God. He set an example of how we should rely on the Holy Spirit in our lives.
What Jesus Set Aside
Jesus didn’t give up his identity as God. Verses like John 3:13, John 8:23, and John 8:58 remind us that he remained divine even while walking on earth. What he did relinquish was his divine right to exercise authority independently. He chose to submit to the Father’s will and allowed the Spirit to work through him. This is why Jesus referred to himself as the “Son of Man.” He emphasized his humanity. He demonstrated that he fully relied on God’s Spirit.
Why This Matters
Understanding this aspect of Jesus’ life helps us see the depth of his humility and love. He didn’t just come to earth as an all-powerful deity. He lived as one of us. He experienced life’s challenges and relied entirely on God. This makes his sacrifice on the cross even more meaningful. He embraced humanity fully—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—to save us.
Jesus is the Son of Man. Remember that he chose to walk the same path we do. He relied on the Holy Spirit to achieve God’s will. His life shows us how to live in faith. It demonstrates dependence on God. This is something we can strive for every day.
