Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus During Times of Shaking

Life often feels like a storm, doesn’t it? We face uncertainties, challenges, and moments when everything seems to be shifting beneath our feet. During such times, the Bible gives us a profound yet simple encouragement: “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2). But what does that mean, especially in these moments of “shaking” referred to in Haggai 2:6 and Hebrews 12:26?

Understanding the “Shaking” Around Us

In Haggai 2:6, God declares, “In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth. Then, I will shake the sea and the dry land.” Similarly, Hebrews 12:26 reflects on this idea of divine shaking. It reminds us of the time when God’s voice shook Mount Sinai. Now, it promises an even greater shaking—not just the earth but the heavens too. These verses speak of disruption. They speak of a rearranging of what we know. They also speak of a time when only what is unshakable will remain.

Shaking is not always a punishment. It can also be a divine way of refining, realigning, and drawing our focus back to what truly matters. It’s an opportunity to let go of temporary, unstable things and anchor ourselves in what is eternal.

Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus: A Steady Focus Amid Shaking

When everything around us feels uncertain, the call to “fix our eyes on Jesus” becomes our lifeline. Hebrews 12:2 describes Jesus as the “author and perfecter of our faith.” This means He is both the beginning and the goal of our journey. By focusing on Him, we find clarity, direction, and strength to endure.

But what does this look like in practical terms?

1. Recognizing Jesus as Our Anchor

A ship relies on its anchor to stay steady during a storm. Similarly, we are called to make Jesus our anchor. Instead of being consumed by fear or distractions, we can find stability in His unchanging nature. He is the rock that doesn’t move, no matter how intense the shaking becomes.

2. Prioritizing His Kingdom

To fix our eyes on Jesus means to prioritize what He values. Matthew 6:33 reminds us to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” This involves making choices that align with His will, trusting that He will take care of the rest. In our careers, relationships, or daily decisions, it’s essential to put His kingdom first. Doing so ensures our lives are built on a firm foundation.

3. Drawing Strength from His Example

Hebrews 12:2 also speaks of Jesus enduring the cross “for the joy set before Him.” He faced unimaginable pain and suffering, yet He remained focused on the greater purpose. When we reflect on His perseverance, we are reminded of an important truth. Our own trials, no matter how daunting, can also lead to joy and transformation.

Practical Ways to Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

If this idea feels abstract, here are some simple, practical steps you can take:

·      Daily Prayer: Spend time talking to God. Share your worries, but also take time to listen and reflect.

·      Reading His Word: Dive into the Bible. Verses like Hebrews 12:2 and Haggai 2:6 remind us of God’s promises during times of uncertainty.

·      Community Support: Surround yourself with others who encourage your faith. A supportive church or small group can help you stay focused.

·      Meditation on His Teachings: Reflect on Jesus’ life and His words. Ask yourself how you can live them out daily.

·      Worship: Use music, art, or any form of expression to connect with God and re-center your heart on Him.

Unshakable Hope

The beauty of fixing our eyes on Jesus is that it shifts our perspective. Instead of being overwhelmed by the shaking around us, we start to see it as part of God’s greater plan. The shaking is not meant to destroy us. It is meant to refine us. It helps us let go of what doesn’t last and hold tightly to what does.

In these times of uncertainty, remember that Jesus is unshakable. He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). By fixing our eyes on Him, we can endure the storm. We know that He is leading us toward joy. He guides us to peace and a future that can’t be shaken.

Let’s take a deep breath. Let’s refocus. Fix our eyes on Jesus. He walks with us through every shaking. He promises to bring us into a kingdom that can’t be moved.
