Modern Idolatry: Choosing Created Things Over the Creator

Why Paul Says Turning From God Leads Us Off Track

Sometimes people think they’re really smart—they claim to have all the answers about life and the universe. But in Romans 1:22-25, Paul, one of the earliest Christian leaders, warns that just because someone believes they’re wise doesn’t mean they truly are. In fact, Paul says, people can end up fooling themselves.

The Claim of Wisdom

What Paul points out first is that some folks act like they’re experts on everything. They talk a big game and try to impress others with their knowledge. But according to Paul, if you leave God out of the picture, this so-called wisdom actually becomes foolishness. It’s like trying to build a house without a foundation—it might look good for a while, but it can’t really stand up.

Trading the Truth for a Lie

Paul goes on to explain that people have made a dangerous swap. Instead of believing in the truth about God—the one who made everything—they start to believe lies. These lies might be about what’s most important in life, what gives us meaning, or where we should put our trust.

Worshipping Created Things

Paul also talks about how people can end up worshipping created things instead of the Creator. That means instead of focusing on God, people might make other things the center of their lives—money, power, status, even other people or objects. When we put these things above everything else, it’s a kind of modern-day idolatry.

God’s Response

So, what happens when people go down this path? Paul says that God lets them follow their own desires, even if those choices lead to trouble. In other words, if people keep pushing God away, God doesn’t force them to come back. Instead, they end up on a path where their decisions can lead to negative consequences.

The Consequences

According to Paul, turning away from God and chasing after other things leads to a kind of moral confusion. People start to lose sight of what’s right and wrong. This can show up in all sorts of unhealthy behaviors and attitudes, hurting themselves and others in the process.

Why This Matters

At its core, Romans 1:22-25 is a warning about what can happen when we think we know better than God, or when we put other things at the center of our lives. Paul isn’t trying to scare people, but to remind them that real wisdom begins with recognizing and honoring the Creator. When we keep our focus on what matters most, we can live lives that are healthier, happier, and more meaningful.
