Why Knowing God Changes Everything
If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I here? What’s the point of life?”—you’re not alone. For centuries, people have searched for meaning, chasing after things like wisdom, strength, or wealth. But according to the Bible, there’s something far more important than all of these: knowing God.
Let’s put it simply. The main goal we should set for ourselves in life is to know God. Jesus taught that “eternal life”—the never-ending, full life God wants to give us—isn’t just about living forever. It’s about truly knowing God and Jesus Christ (see John 17:3). This isn’t just head knowledge or facts, but a real, personal friendship with the one who made you.
Think about it: The Bible says the best thing anyone can experience is knowing God. It brings more joy and satisfaction than anything else. It’s not about being the smartest, the strongest, or the richest. In Jeremiah 9:23-24, God says: “Don’t let the wise brag about their wisdom. Don’t let the strong brag about their strength. Don’t let the rich brag about their riches. If you want to brag, brag that you understand and know me.”
God cares most about people knowing him. In Hosea 6:6, God even says, “I want you to know me more than I want sacrifices or burnt offerings.” In other words, God values a relationship with us far more than any ritual or outward show.
So, what does all this mean for us? The most important foundation for our lives is knowing God. This foundation gives our life shape, purpose, and meaning. When you truly understand that this is your purpose, many of life’s other questions and problems become clearer. Priorities become clearer. What truly matters comes into focus.
If you’re already a follower of Jesus, these truths warm your heart and give you a sense of purpose. But, if faith has been more of a formality, view it as more than just a routine. Take this chance to explore a real relationship with God. Develop a personal connection with Him. This is an opportunity beyond just religion.
In short, the greatest aim in life—something that brings true joy, peace, and satisfaction—is simply this: to know God.
