Awakening to the Times: Simple Reflections on the Church and the Gospel Message

Understanding Our Calling in Today’s World

Sometimes in life, we get so used to our routines that we stop noticing what’s really happening around us. This can even happen in our faith. In Romans 13:11, the Bible tells us to “wake up” because our salvation is closer than ever. In other words, God is calling us to pay attention to what’s going on and to take our faith seriously.

Recognizing the Moment

There’s a story in the Bible (1 Chronicles 12:32) about a group called the Sons of Issachar. They were known for understanding the times they lived in and knowing what to do. Today, we’re called to do the same. Are we really listening to what people in our churches need? Are we helping them deal with all the confusing messages and ideas in the world? It’s easy to go through the motions, but God wants us to be wise and thoughtful leaders and followers.

Being Honest About Our Journey

I have endeavored to share about Jesus for many years. I know what it’s like to worry about whether I’m doing it right. Sometimes I wonder if I’m being too critical or worrying too much about the problems I see in the church. But I’ve learned that it’s okay to care deeply. It’s not about blaming anyone—it’s about wanting to be true to Jesus and the good news He brings.

One important lesson I’ve learned is that we all have things to learn, no matter how long we’ve been Christians. None of us are perfect, and sometimes we make mistakes. That’s why it’s crucial to have people who care enough to tell us the truth. They help us when we go off track. They encourage us to keep going. We need each other to grow and stay grounded in what’s true.

Encouragement for the Church

My hope for the church is that we would be brave enough to look at ourselves honestly. Let’s not be afraid to ask the hard questions. We should read the Bible for ourselves. We need to talk openly about what’s working and what’s not. God isn’t out to shame us—He wants to help us grow and become more like Jesus.

As leaders and members of the church, we work hard and pour our hearts into what we do. It’s important to pause and ask: Are we really sharing the good news about Jesus? Or have we started teaching something else without realizing it? Are we helping people know Jesus better, or are they leaving church feeling empty?

At the end of the day, the one we answer to is Jesus Christ. He’s the one who calls us, teaches us, and gives us strength. Let’s do our best to stick to what’s true, encourage each other, and help others find real life in Him.

Staying True to the Gospel

The message about Jesus is powerful and precious. We shouldn’t let anything water it down or take away its meaning. As we consider the current state and future of the church, let’s return to the basics. Trust Jesus, love others, and speak the truth with kindness. In Him, we’ll find everything we need to do what He’s asked us to do.
