Trusting God’s Provision: “Don’t Worry About What You Are Going to Drink”

 Understanding Faith in Everyday Life

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matt. 6:31-33)

What Does “Don’t Worry About What You Are Going to Drink” Really Mean?

Sometimes in life, we worry a lot about the basics—what we’ll eat, what we’ll drink, how we’ll make ends meet. It’s easy to get stuck in a loop of anxiety, especially when things are uncertain. But the Bible teaches us something different. We should not let our worries take over. We’re called to focus on God. We need to trust that He will supply what we need.

Breaking Down the Message

This phrase, “don’t worry about what you are going to drink,” is part of one of Jesus’ most famous teachings. It originates from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:31-33). Jesus says we shouldn’t be anxious about daily necessities like food, drink, or clothes. Instead, He tells us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” He promises that God will take care of the rest.

Why Does This Matter?

At its core, this teaching is about trust. Jesus knew that people naturally worry about survival and daily needs. But He also knew that God, our Heavenly Father, knows exactly what we need—even before we ask. We should put God first in our lives. Pursuing Him must be our top priority. He promises to look out for us in every way.

Examples from Nature

To help us understand, Jesus talked about the birds and the flowers. Birds don’t have to stockpile food or grow their own crops, yet they always find enough to eat. Flowers don’t shop for clothes, but they grow in beautiful colors. God takes care of the birds and the flowers, creatures that don’t work or worry like us. Imagine how much more He will take care of us. We are His children.

What Else Does the Bible Say?

The theme of trusting God runs throughout the Bible. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians (Philippians 4:6-7), encourages us not to be anxious. Instead, he advises us to pray about everything. When we do, God gives us a sense of peace that doesn’t make sense to others. This peace comes from knowing He’s in control.

Living This Out in Everyday Life

Putting this teaching into practice doesn’t mean we ignore our responsibilities or sit back waiting for miracles. It means we do our part—working, planning, making wise choices—but we don’t let fear and worry rule our hearts. In tough times, we choose to trust that God sees us. We believe He will give what we need, even if it comes in unexpected ways.

A Personal Story

Like many people, I’ve had moments where worry about money or the future kept me up at night. I took a step back and prayed. I made seeking God my main focus. I found that things often worked out. Sometimes things worked out in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Opportunities showed up, help arrived when I needed it most, and my needs were met. Through these experiences, I learned firsthand that God is faithful to His promises.

The Takeaway

“Don’t worry about what you are going to drink” isn’t just a nice saying. It’s an invitation to shift our focus from anxiety to faith. If we put God first and trust Him with our needs, He will take care of us. When worry creeps in, remember the birds and the flowers: if God looks after them, He’ll look after you, too.

Final Encouragement

So, if you find yourself worried about the basics—or anything else—take a deep breath. Pray, trust God, and keep moving ahead. His care is bigger than your fears, and His provision is more than enough.
