Understanding the Good News and Our Call as Christians
Let’s be honest—life these days can feel overwhelming. We see chaos, confusion, and even calamity around us. Many people are searching for hope. They seek meaning and something they can rely on. In times like these, there’s nothing more needed than some good news. That’s exactly what the word “gospel” means—good news!
What Is the Good News?
At its heart, the gospel is the message that Jesus Christ brought to humanity. It’s not just another idea or religious teaching. It’s God’s own announcement that there is hope, forgiveness, and new life available to everyone through Jesus. In simple terms, the gospel tells us that God loves us. He sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can be reconciled with God and receive eternal life.
This is the message Jesus Himself preached—the “good news of the Kingdom of God.” He talked about a coming Kingdom where God’s justice, love, and peace would rule. That’s why it’s good news. It offers every person freedom from the guilt and consequences of sin. It also brings hope for a future with God.
Why Is Preaching the Gospel So Important?
The world is full of different voices and teachings. But the gospel is unique because it comes directly from God, not from human ideas. The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 1:6-9. He emphasized that getting the gospel right is crucial. If we get the message wrong, we risk missing out on what God really offers.
The gospel shows us how we can be saved. It’s not about trying to be good enough or following a list of rules. It’s about trusting in what Jesus has done for us. That’s why we’re urged to search the Scriptures carefully. This way, we know exactly what God is saying. We don’t rely on what someone else claim.
What Does It Mean to Believe in the Gospel?
Believing in the gospel involves accepting the message about Jesus. It means trusting in Him for forgiveness and new life. It also involves choosing to follow Him as Lord. It means becoming His disciple—a word that simply means “learner” or “follower.” To be a disciple is to imitate Jesus. It means holding onto His sacrifice. It also involves living in the power of His resurrection.
When we believe the gospel, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us live out our faith. He also assists us in sharing the good news with others.
The Great Commission—Our Mission as Christians
Before Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His followers a clear command. It is often called the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20). He said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s the mission for every Christian.
The main goal? Make disciples—help others know Jesus, believe His message, and live it out. We do this by going into the world, sharing the gospel, baptizing believers, and teaching them everything Jesus taught us. And we’re not alone: Jesus promised, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The book of Acts shows how the earliest Christians took this to heart. They spread the good news throughout their city. They spread it across their country and eventually to the whole world. Today, we’re called to continue that mission, sharing the gospel wherever God places us.
Why Is It So Urgent?
Scripture warns us that not everyone will see or accept the gospel right away. According to 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, the “god of this age” tries to blind people to the truth. This means evil spiritual forces are at work. That’s why it’s so urgent. People are lost and searching for hope. God wants to use us to share His love with them.
God’s heart is for everyone to know the truth and be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). We’ve been given the gospel as a precious gift. It’s our privilege and responsibility to share it clearly. By doing so, others can find the same hope we have found.
Conclusion
In a world swirling with bad news, the gospel stands out as true good news. It is news of love, hope, and rescue through Jesus Christ. As Christians, it’s vital that we understand the message ourselves and share it faithfully. The gospel changes lives—it changed the world once, and it can change our world today, one heart at a time.
