The Church’s Need for Renewal: Rediscovering God’s Majesty

Why We Need to Refocus on the Awe and Power of God

Let’s talk honestly for a moment about where the Church is today. If you look around, it might seem like things are going well—church buildings are full, programs are running smoothly, and there’s a lot of activity. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll notice something’s missing. There’s a real need for renewal, a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Church needs people who are genuinely filled with God’s Spirit, people rooted in the Scriptures, who can make sense of the times we’re living in and hear what God is saying today.

The Problem: We’ve Lost Our Sense of God’s Majesty

Over the years, things inside the Church have changed—not always in a good way. Many believers have gradually lost their sense of just how great and majestic God really is. A. W. Tozer, in his book Knowledge of the Holy, talks about this loss of awe as one of the main reasons we see weakness in our faith today. Instead of thinking of God as high, holy, and awesome, we’ve started to see God as smaller and less important than God truly is. This wasn’t a sudden decision; it happened slowly, almost without us realizing it. That makes it even more concerning.

Why Does This Matter?

When we stop seeing God as majestic and powerful, it affects everything else in our spiritual lives. Our worship loses its depth. We lose that feeling of standing in awe before God. The words “Be still, and know that I am God” start to lose their meaning. Instead, we get busier and more self-confident, but less connected to the Holy Spirit. Even though churches might be growing in size and influence on the outside, on the inside, many believers are struggling. We’re gaining numbers, but losing the quality and depth of our faith.

What Do People Think?

If you scroll through Facebook or Twitter, you’ll see people talking about how church feels more like a show than a place to meet with God. Some mention that while churches have the latest technology and packed calendars, it’s rare to find places where people truly sense God’s presence. Others say they long for real spiritual encounters—not just another event or activity.

What’s the Solution?

The way forward is to get back to what we’ve lost. We need to rediscover the wonder, awe, and majesty of God—to see God as God truly is. This means spending more time in the Scriptures, slowing down our busy lives, and letting the Holy Spirit fill us again. We need to read the great Christian thinkers and writers—not just let their books gather dust on the shelves. Most of all, we need to remember that true spiritual power comes from knowing God deeply and personally, not just going through the motions.

The Bottom Line

The Church doesn’t need more entertainment, bigger buildings, or busier schedules. What we really need is a renewed vision of God’s greatness. When we focus on who God really is, everything else falls into place—our worship, our lives, and our ability to make a difference in the world. Let’s pray for a fresh sense of awe, a deeper hunger for God, and a Church that truly reflects the majesty of the One we follow.
