What Does “Righteousness” Mean in the Bible? Part 2

Understanding a Key Biblical Concept in Everyday Language

When you hear the word “righteousness” in the Bible, it might sound complicated or old-fashioned, but at its core, it’s all about living in a way that lines up with what God wants—both inside and out. Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense, even if you’re not a theologian.

God’s Righteousness: The Perfect Standard

First off, when we talk about God’s righteousness, we’re talking about something that’s built into who God is. God is always fair, always just, and always holy. He never does anything wrong or unfair. In the Bible, God’s actions and judgments are always the gold standard for what’s right. God’s righteousness shows up in His laws, in the way He judges, and most of all, in the way He offers people a fresh start—what Christians call salvation—through Jesus.

Human Righteousness: A Gift, Not an Achievement

Here’s where it gets interesting for us. People aren’t naturally righteous the way God is. According to the Bible, none of us can earn righteousness by ticking off a list of good deeds—we just can’t be perfect on our own. Instead, righteousness is something we “receive” when we trust in Jesus and try to follow God’s ways. It’s a bit like being given a new clean shirt, not earning one by doing chores. The Bible mentions this in books like Romans (3:21-22) and Deuteronomy (6:25): our right standing with God comes from faith, and then it shows up in the way we live.

What Does Righteousness Look Like?

·      Justice: Treating people fairly, standing up for what’s right, and refusing to take advantage of others.

·      Holiness: Choosing to avoid things that are wrong or hurtful, and aiming to live a “clean” life.

·      Obedience: Doing what God asks, even when it’s not easy or popular.

·      Faith: Trusting in Jesus and believing that His sacrifice makes us right with God.

·      Salvation: Righteousness is a key part of being “saved”—having a restored relationship with God, both now and forever.

What About Self-Righteousness?

There’s a big difference between true righteousness and what the Bible calls “self-righteousness.” Self-righteousness is when someone thinks they’re better than others because of their own good behavior. The Bible warns against this—it’s not about bragging or looking down on others. Real righteousness is humble and comes from God, not from trying to be perfect on your own.

What Do Psalms and Proverbs Say?

If you flip through Psalms and Proverbs, you’ll see a lot about “the righteous.” These are people who respect God and try to live His way. They’re contrasted with the “wicked”—those who ignore God or do things their own way, regardless of what’s right.

In a Nutshell

Righteousness in the Bible is all about reflecting God’s perfect character, not because we’re flawless, but because we trust Him and let that trust change the way we live. It’s about doing what’s just, living a clean life, obeying God, and showing genuine faith—knowing that it’s a gift from God, not something we earn.

Whether you’re new to church or you’ve been around faith for years, understanding righteousness is about seeing God’s goodness and letting it shape your everyday choices.
