Understanding Jesus’s Promise in Everyday Language
When Jesus said, “I will build my church,” in Matthew 16:18, he was making a big statement about his plans, his people, and what the “church” really means. Let’s break it down in simple terms:
Jesus’s Declaration: Taking the Lead
By saying “I will build my church,” Jesus didn’t mean he was going to put up a building. Instead, he was talking about creating a community—a group of people who follow him. Jesus is saying he’s the one who starts, grows, and keeps this group strong, not any one person.
The Church Is People, Not a Place
When we hear “church,” we often think of buildings with steeples and stained glass. But Jesus meant something much bigger: his “church” is anyone who believes in him. It’s a family of people all over the world who trust him, not just those who meet in a specific building.
Who Is the “Rock”?
Some people think Jesus was calling Peter (one of his disciples) the foundation of the church, because Peter’s name means “rock.” But if you look closely, many Bible experts say Jesus was actually talking about himself as the main foundation—the strong, steady rock that holds everything up. Jesus is the reason the church stands firm.
There’s even a verse in Ephesians 2:20 that says the church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus himself as the “cornerstone”—the most important stone that holds up the whole structure.
The Church Will Last, No Matter What
Jesus also promised that “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” In simple words, this means that nothing—not even death or trouble—can destroy the community Jesus is building. The church will face challenges but will never be wiped out.
Built with “Living Stones”
Imagine a building made of living, breathing people instead of bricks. That’s the idea here! Every single believer is like a “living stone,” making up the church together. No one is left out, and everyone matters.
Jesus Is Still Building
The church isn’t a finished project. Jesus is always adding to it, welcoming new people, and helping his followers grow stronger in their faith.
Peter’s Role: Speaking Up for Everyone
When Peter spoke up and said that Jesus is the Messiah (God’s chosen one), Jesus praised him. Peter represented all Jesus’s followers who would openly believe and say the same thing. Jesus told Peter he would have a special role, but he made it clear that the church isn’t built just on one person—faith in Jesus is what really matters.
Authority in the Church
Jesus also talked about giving Peter (and the other apostles) a kind of authority: the ability to teach what’s right or wrong according to God’s ways. But only God can forgive sins. The job of church leaders is to help people understand what God says, but not to take God’s place.
Bottom Line
In simple terms, “I will build my church” means Jesus is gathering a group of people who believe in him, with himself as their strong foundation. The church is made of people, not buildings, and it’s built to last forever—no matter what. Everyone who trusts in Jesus is a part of this amazing community.
