Why God Is the Best Gift the Gospel Offers
If you ask people what the best thing about Christianity is, you might hear answers like hope, forgiveness, peace, or even heaven. But the heart of the gospel—the very best thing God gives us through Jesus—is not just blessings or things for us. It’s God himself.
The Main Point: God Is the Gift
Over time, people have often shifted their attention away from God as the best thing about the gospel. Instead, we sometimes focus on what God can do for us, or how much he loves us by making us feel important. But the Bible teaches something deeper: the most amazing part of the gospel is that we get to know, love, and enjoy God forever.
For example, in Psalm 27:4, the writer says the one thing they want most is to be with God, seeing his beauty and learning from him. And in Philippians 3:8, Paul says nothing in life compares to knowing Jesus—everything else is rubbish in comparison.
More Than Just Getting Stuff
God gives us many good things. He helps us, blesses us, and promises us eternal life. But if those things aren’t leading us closer to God, we’re missing the point. The greatest joy is not in the gifts, but in the Giver. The gospel is good news because, through Jesus, we get to be with God.
What Does It Mean to Feel Loved?
Our world has taught us that being loved means being made much of—getting attention or feeling special. Even in church, we might think God loves us because he makes much of us. But if love is only about us being lifted up, then God’s greatness and goodness fade into the background. Real love, according to the Bible, is that God brings us into his own joy and glory—he lets us see and enjoy him forever.
Looking for Joy in the Right Place
We all want to be happy, and it’s easy to think happiness is about feeling important. But think about visiting somewhere breathtaking, like the Grand Canyon or the Alps. We don’t go there to boost our self-esteem—we go to be amazed by something bigger than ourselves. True happiness comes from experiencing greatness outside of us, not just being told we’re great.
The Greatest Good of the Gospel
The gospel’s highest, best, and final gift is that we get to see and enjoy “the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). God’s love for us isn’t mainly about making us the center—it’s about giving us himself, the one who is truly satisfying forever.
To make this possible, God sent Jesus to pay the price for our sins, so we could be brought near to God. This is not something we can earn; it’s a free gift. The point is not just that our sins are forgiven or that we get to go to heaven, but that we get God himself.
The Bottom Line
The best news in the world is not just what God does for us, but that we get to enjoy him forever. Jesus gave his life so we could have this gift—not just a ticket to heaven, but a relationship with God that starts now and lasts forever. In the end, the gospel’s greatest gift is the chance to see, know, and delight in God himself.
