Why Righteousness Matters for Everyday Believers
Introduction
Pursuing righteousness may sound like a big, churchy idea, but at its heart, it’s about living in a way that’s pleasing to God and good for those around us. In the Christian faith, righteousness is more than just a rule book—it’s a journey, a relationship, and a daily choice to grow closer to God. The Bible talks about righteousness all the time, stressing how important it is. Verses like 1 Timothy 6:11 urge us to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.” But what does that really mean for people like you and me, living regular lives, juggling family, work, and the ups and downs of each day?
This post breaks down the idea of righteousness in simple terms, exploring why it’s at the heart of the Christian faith, how it has changed lives—including mine—and what practical steps we can take to walk this path.
Understanding Righteousness
What Is Righteousness?
Let’s start by defining the word. In the Bible, righteousness basically means living in a way that lines up with God’s character and His standards of goodness. Imagine a life marked by honesty, fairness, kindness, and doing what’s right—even when it’s hard. The Hebrew word for righteousness is *tzedakah*, which points to actions and behavior that reflect justice and integrity.
Righteousness isn’t just about avoiding “bad stuff”; it’s about actively choosing what is right. In fact, the apostle Paul talks a lot about righteousness as living ethically and treating others well (see Romans 6:13, Ephesians 4:24). So, righteousness is both a state of being—who we are in God—and a call to action—how we live in the world.
The Source of Righteousness
Here’s something important: righteousness doesn’t come from us trying really hard on our own. The Bible teaches that true righteousness comes from God. Romans 8:8 says that without God, we can’t please Him. It’s only through faith in Jesus Christ that we receive God’s righteousness as a gift. This isn’t something we earn; it’s given freely by God’s grace and powered by the Holy Spirit working in us.
Think of it this way: trying to be righteous by sheer willpower is like trying to power a car without fuel. Faith in Christ is the fuel that makes real change possible.
The Journey to Righteousness
My Personal Experience
I grew up attending a Baptist church, surrounded by teachings on salvation and baptism. But for a long time, I didn’t truly understand what it meant to pursue righteousness. I knew the basics—go to church, be a good person—but I was missing a deeper connection. As a young adult, I drifted into a lifestyle that was more focused on what the world said was important: success, fun, and fitting in. I didn’t realize I was missing out on something much greater.
It wasn’t until I went through a rough time—a “wilderness season,” as some call it—that God began to open my eyes. Through reading the Bible and listening to good teaching, I discovered that God saw me as worthy and beloved, not because of anything I’d done, but because of what Jesus did for me. That was life-changing. I realized righteousness wasn’t about rules, but about a relationship and a new identity.
Walking in the Spirit
One thing the Bible makes clear is that the Christian life isn’t just about our own strength. Galatians 5:16 tells us, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” In simple terms: let God guide your steps. Pursuing righteousness means letting God shape your thoughts, choices, and behaviors every day. Sometimes, it’s as simple as pausing before reacting, praying for help, or choosing forgiveness over anger.
This process takes time and humility. No one gets it perfect, but every step closer to God brings more peace and purpose.
The Importance of Righteousness
A Reflection of God’s Nature
Righteousness is one of God’s key qualities. Psalm 89:14 says, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.” When we pursue righteousness, we’re reflecting God’s nature to the world. That means living with integrity, showing compassion, and standing up for what’s right—even when it’s unpopular. In a world that often celebrates selfishness and shortcuts, being righteous is a way to stand out for the right reasons.
Impact on Society
Righteousness isn’t just a personal thing; it impacts everyone around us. When people choose to live by God’s standards, families become stronger, communities become more peaceful, and societies thrive. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” In other words, righteousness brings joy and fairness, while selfishness and injustice bring pain and disorder.
Think about the difference it makes when leaders are honest, when neighbors are caring, when children learn kindness. Righteousness ripples out, creating a better world for all.
A Call to Stand Apart
Philippians 2:14–15 encourages believers to “do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Pursuing righteousness isn’t about being perfect, but it is about making choices that set us apart. It’s a way of shining light in dark places, bringing hope and truth where it’s needed most.
In today’s culture, it can be tough to live differently from the crowd. But when we do, our lives become examples of God’s love and power.
Practical Steps to Pursue Righteousness
· Study the Word of God: The Bible is the roadmap for righteous living. Romans 10:14 reminds us how vital it is to hear and understand God’s Word. Regular reading and reflection help us know what God wants and gives us strength to follow through.
· Seek the Holy Spirit’s Guidance: Real change happens when we invite God’s Spirit to work in us. Romans 12:2 talks about renewing our minds—letting God transform how we think and act. Before making decisions, ask for God’s help and listen for His leading.
· Practice Righteous Behavior: Righteousness is practical. It’s about doing good, loving others, and standing up for truth. Micah 6:8 sums it up well: “Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” Each day, look for ways to be kind, fair, and honest—in work, at home, and in your community.
Conclusion
The journey to righteousness isn’t a sprint, but a lifelong walk. Each step draws us closer to God and opens the door to greater joy, peace, and purpose. When we pursue righteousness, we’re not just following rules—we’re living in the light, rejecting the stuff that drags us down, and shining as examples of what God can do.
As Jude 24 puts it: “Now unto him that is able to guard you from stumbling, and to set you before the presence of his glory without blemish in exceeding joy.” God is with us each step of the way, ready to help us live lives that reflect His love, justice, and holiness.
So, whether you’re new to faith or have been walking with God for years, remember: pursuing righteousness is worth it. It’s the path to true freedom, lasting joy, and a life that makes a difference—not just for you, but for everyone you meet.
God bless!
