Understanding True Faith: Drawing Near to God in Spirit and Truth

Explaining Divine Faith in Everyday Language

Let’s break it down simply: God isn’t a physical being we can touch or see—God is Spirit. So, if we want to connect with Him, it has to be on His level: spiritually, honestly, and with our hearts open. There’s no other way to really worship or get close to God except by stepping into that spiritual reality—being genuine and real with Him.

Here’s the thing about faith: it’s not something we can build by ourselves, like solving a math problem or figuring out a puzzle. It’s not just about accepting an idea because it sounds right, or believing something because we discovered it on our own. Real faith—the kind that comes from God—is a gift. God gives it to us when we come to Him in Spirit and in Truth. It’s different from the kind of belief people talk about when they say “I have faith in myself” or “I believe what I see.” That’s just relying on our own thinking and what we can figure out with our senses. But the faith that God offers goes way beyond what we can see, touch, or reason out for ourselves.

Most of the time, what we call “faith” is just agreeing with things we can understand or prove. But that’s not the real deal. That’s just human reasoning. The true faith God gives us actually shows us things that are invisible and impossible to figure out with our own minds. It’s like having special eyesight that lets us see the bigger picture, even when it doesn’t make sense to everyone else.

When we step into this spiritual life—when we let God’s Spirit guide us—we receive a kind of faith that changes everything. It’s not something we can create by thinking hard or believing harder. It’s something only God can give. And this kind of faith doesn’t just improve our lives; it actually breaks down anything built purely on human logic and reasoning. Why? Because our brains and sight are limited to what’s right in front of us, but God’s faith sees far beyond. Human reason only thrives on what can be proven, measured, or discovered. But God’s faith welcomes what can’t be seen, and trusts God to hold it all together.

So, if you’re wondering what real faith looks like, the Bible puts it this way: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” (Heb. 11:1-3)

That line “through faith we understand…” is huge. It means the deepest understanding isn’t something we come up with ourselves—it’s something God gives us. Faith is actually divine energy, helping us grasp things that are impossible to understand any other way. With God, faith lets us believe and trust in things that seem totally out of reach or even unbelievable. It doesn’t depend on us seeing or proving anything first. In fact, God Himself is the starting point: you can’t have true faith until you’re willing to meet Him and let Him give it to you.

To sum it up: A Christian doesn’t live by what they can see or prove. They walk by faith, trusting God even when there’s no visible evidence. That’s why true faith is so powerful—it opens up a whole new way of living, seeing, and understanding, one that goes far beyond what our minds alone can imagine.
