Cultivating a Deeper Desire for God: A Personal Reflection

An open Bible resting on a log, symbolizing reflection and connection with God in nature.

How Anyone Can Grow Closer to God—One Day at a Time

Have you ever paused in the middle of a busy day? Do you feel a quiet longing for something deeper than what the world offers? Maybe you’ve looked at others whose faith seems alive and wondered, “What am I missing?” If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone. The truth is, wanting more of God isn’t just for spiritual “experts.” It is not only for people who’ve memorized whole books of the Bible. It’s an invitation for everyone—no matter where you’re starting from. I want to share a personal reflection. I’ll also share some simple, practical ways. These have helped me grow closer to God, step by step, day by day.

What Does It Mean to Desire God?

For a long time, I thought desiring God meant needing to feel something huge. I believed it required a rush of emotions at church or a mountaintop spiritual experience. But as life has taught me, it’s more about the small choices I make daily. Desiring God means choosing to seek Him, even in ordinary routines. It’s like a gentle tug at your heart, a thirst you can’t quite quench with anything else. Psalm 42 uses a powerful image. It states, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.” Just as water is essential for the deer, God is essential for our souls. That longing is the starting point—even if it’s only a flicker.

Making God a Priority in Everyday Life

I used to think putting God first was complicated. But Jesus summed it up beautifully in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” In practice, it means setting aside space for God in the midst of my messy schedules, worries, and ambitions. Sometimes, it’s a few quiet moments before my day starts—talking honestly to God about what’s ahead. Other times, it’s pausing in the car, between errands, just to remember He’s with me. Each small act is a seed planted. The more I do this, the more I find my desire for Him growing.

Simple and Practical Ways to Grow Closer to God

If you’re feeling like wanting God more is impossible or hard, let me assure you. It’s not about having the right words. It’s not about rituals or fancy “spiritual moves.” Here are some simple steps that have helped me and countless others deepen their connection with God:

Talk to God (Prayer)

Prayer isn’t a performance—it’s a conversation. You don’t need to recite perfect phrases or sit in a special place. I’ve prayed while walking my dog, driving to work, or lying awake at night. I share my honest thoughts, doubts, struggles, and joys. The Bible says, “Pray about everything.” God isn’t searching for perfect people; He’s looking for honest ones. When I open up—even about silly or messy stuff—I feel closer to Him.

Read and Reflect on the Bible

You don’t need to read chapters at a time. Sometimes a single verse has stuck with me all day. I ask myself, “What does this mean for me? Is there something I can try today?” Psalm 1 says people who delight in God’s Word are “like trees planted by streams of water.” It nourishes and refreshes me, even when life feels dry.

Worship—In Your Own Way

Worship isn’t just singing on Sundays. It’s recognizing God’s greatness in everyday life. I’ve felt lifted by music in my headphones, or simply by listing things I’m grateful for. Jesus described true worship as something that happens in our hearts, guided by truth (John 4:24). You can worship anywhere: folding laundry, walking in nature, or talking to a friend about what excites you spiritually.

Live Out Your Faith

Desiring God changes how I act. It draws me to kindness, honesty, forgiveness, and choices that honor Him. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you’ll keep My commandments” (John 14:15). I don’t always get it right. But each time I try, I choose love over anger. Each time I choose patience over frustration, I find myself wanting more of God’s presence.

Find Community

Trying to follow God alone is tough. I’ve discovered that being around others who seek God makes a huge difference. Sometimes it’s a church group, a friend who checks in, or an online community. Sharing doubts, joys, and struggles builds strength and keeps my desire alive. When I fall, supportive friends help me up. When they struggle, I’m there for them. We grow together.

Dealing with Difficulties and Distractions

Let’s be real—life gets busy, and sometimes my desire for God fades. I get caught up in worries, distractions, or plain old boredom. Jesus talked about this in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1–23): seeds fall on different types of soil. Some never grow, some get choked by weeds (worries, busyness), but some flourish. What makes the difference? The soil—the state of our hearts. The “good soil” holds onto God’s Word, even when things are hard.

If you’re going through a “dry spell,” don’t beat yourself up. James 1:12 reminds us: those who persevere under trials will be blessed. The key isn’t being perfect—it’s showing up. Keep seeking, even when it’s hard or you don’t feel much. God honors honest effort. I’ve found that persistence—just keeping at it—makes all the difference.

The Holy Spirit—Your Helper and Encourager

I used to think spiritual growth was all on my shoulders. Yet, the Bible teaches that God gives believers the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is a helper, advocate, and comforter (John 14:12–17). The Holy Spirit understands my weaknesses. It prays for me when I don’t know what to say (Romans 8:26–27). It gives me strength to keep at it. I picture the Spirit as a spiritual coach: encouraging, guiding, stirring up new desire when I’m tired. Even when I don’t feel it, the Holy Spirit is at work, helping my faith grow.

The Spirit also helps me understand the Bible, gives wisdom for tough choices, and comforts me in hard times. God’s Spirit is a sign of His love and care. It stays with us always. It is a source of holiness and happiness along our journey.

Understanding God’s Role and Ours

Sometimes, I’ve caught myself blaming God when things go wrong or when I struggle. But the Bible teaches that evil and temptation don’t come from God—they come from our own hearts (James 1:12–18). God is like the sun: always shining, even when clouds hide Him. Every good and perfect gift—especially spiritual renewal—comes from Him. When I open myself to God’s influence, He changes me from the inside out.

Praying in Christ’s Name

One practical tip: pray in Jesus’ name. Not as a ritual, but as a sign of trust in His love and authority (John 14:12–17). When I pray this way, I’m depending on His merit, trusting He knows what’s best for me. The Holy Spirit is a gift that comes through Christ—a sign of His ongoing presence.

Learning from Jesus’ Example

Jesus didn’t use fancy settings or outward displays. He taught from a boat so people hear, and used simple stories to explain deep truths (Matthew 13:1–23). In my own life, I’ve found it’s best not to focus on appearances. God sees my heart. I use what I have, where I am, to grow closer to Him.

Practical Encouragement for Every Day

  • Desiring God is a process. Start small, and be patient with yourself.
  • Use everyday moments. A walk outside, a quiet car ride, a pause before bed—turn your thoughts toward God.
  • Be honest with God. Share your doubts, struggles, and hopes. God welcomes authenticity.
  • Stay connected to community. Supportive friends help you get back up when you stumble.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit for help. You’re never alone in your spiritual journey.

Remember, the goal isn’t to be “perfect” but to be open to God’s love and leadership in your life. As you keep seeking—through prayer, reading, worship, and living your faith—you’ll find your desire for God deepening. Over time, this pursuit will change everything: bringing peace, purpose, and a joy that lasts. Let this encourage you—God wants you to draw near, and He’s eager to meet you every step of the way. Start today, just as you are.
