Why God Deserves Our Best Effort
Many times in life, we give our best time, energy, and attention to work, family, or our own pleasure, and only give God what is left over—our “leftovers.” This means we spend most of our days busy with earning money, chores, and fun, and only think about God if we have extra time or energy.
The message is this: If we put as much effort into seeking God as we do into our daily work and pleasures, we would see real growth in our spiritual lives. We don’t have to choose between making a living and living for God—there is time for both. Taking care of your family, job, or studies doesn’t mean you have to leave God out. In fact, there are people, like Susannah Wesley (who had 19 children!), who managed both family and faith very well.
Another problem is how easy it is to let our good intentions for God “leak away.” We may decide to pray more, to read the Bible, or to be kinder, but often those promises fade quickly, like water leaking from a cracked cup. Earthly things—money, comfort, entertainment—are always calling for our attention. Spiritual things are quieter; they wait for us to notice them.
The warning is not to let God get only what’s left after everything else. God is serious about us, and we should be serious about Him. Don’t put off seeking God because you are busy, or afraid of what others think, or want more fun first. In the end, what matters most is our relationship with God.
We are called to give God our best—not just the leftovers. When we put God first, everything else in life falls into place better. The rewards of truly seeking God are greater than anything else we could chase after.
