Understanding and Overcoming Obstacles in Our Spiritual Journey
Many people, deep down, have a longing to be close to God. This is a desire placed within us, but wanting to be in God’s presence is not enough. There are obstacles in the way that can make the journey difficult. In simple terms, let’s explore what blocks us from getting closer to God and how we can overcome these challenges.
Our Nature: The Biggest Hindrance
The main thing that keeps us away from God is our unredeemed nature. This simply means the part of us that is not changed by God—what many call the “sin nature.” For those who don’t believe in God, worship and a true relationship with Him are impossible, because our sinful nature is very different from God’s pure nature. Sin pushes us away from God, making us seek other things for comfort and satisfaction.
Even for people who do believe, there are still challenges. The enemy—the force that tries to keep us away from God—works hard to block the path, making it seem almost impossible to get close to Him. Many believers feel discouraged and even give up trying to seek God’s presence, thinking it’s too hard or out of reach.
Why the Obstacles Matter
It’s important to realize that the existence of these obstacles actually shows how valuable God’s presence is. If it was easy and there were no challenges, we might not appreciate being close to God as much. Anything that has great worth is often difficult to obtain. Being in God’s presence is the most valuable thing we could ever have, so it should not surprise us that there are hurdles to overcome.
Some people make the journey seem even more complicated, adding rules or requirements that discourage others from trying. But seeking God is not just for the lazy or for those who want entertainment and easy pleasures. It’s a journey that calls for desire, effort, and commitment.
Paying Attention: The First Step
The Bible encourages us to “give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip” (Hebrews 2:1). This means we need to actively focus on the lessons and truths that God has shown us. If we don’t pay attention, we risk missing out on what God is offering. It’s not something we can do passively; we need to be persistent, deliberate, and intentional.
Spiritual Opposition: The Enemy’s Efforts
The enemy of our soul does not want us to find God’s presence. That’s why there are so many distractions and temptations all around us. Sometimes, these distractions come in the form of entertainment, busyness, or things that pull our attention away from spiritual matters. The enemy tries to make our journey seem impossible, but the good news is, the Bible says, “greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). This means that God’s power in us is stronger than any obstacle that comes our way.
Common Hindrances to God’s Presence
Let’s look at some of the main things that keep us from seeking and experiencing God’s presence:
· Distractions of Everyday Life: Busy schedules, social media, entertainment, and worries can fill our minds, leaving little room for God. We have to be intentional about setting aside time for Him.
· Unresolved Sin: When we hold onto bad habits or wrong attitudes, they block us from connecting with God. Confessing and turning away from sin opens the way to His presence.
· Lack of Desire or Motivation: Sometimes, we just don’t feel interested in spiritual things. We need an “impassioned desire” for God—something stronger than anything else.
· Discouragement and Doubt: If we’ve tried before and failed, or if we doubt God’s love, we might give up. Remember, obstacles are part of the journey, and God is always ready to help us.
· Legalism or Complicated Rules: Some people make it seem like you have to be perfect or follow a long list of rules to come to God. God wants a relationship, not just rule-following.
· Fear of Change: Getting closer to God can mean changing old ways or giving up things we’re used to. Change can be hard, but the reward—God’s presence—is worth it.
· Pride and Self-Reliance: Thinking we can do it all on our own keeps us from realizing our need for God’s help.
How to Overcome the Hindrances
Facing these obstacles can feel overwhelming, but there are simple steps we can take to move past them:
· Ask God for Help: God is always willing to help us. Praying honestly and asking for strength can make a big difference.
· Make Time: Put aside moments in your day to be quiet, read, pray, and focus on God. Even a few minutes can help.
· Confess and Let Go: When you realize something is blocking you—like sin or resentment—bring it to God and let it go.
· Stay Encouraged: Remember, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with the same things. Find support from others who are also seeking God.
· Keep Your Eyes on the Goal: Focus on why you want to be in God’s presence. When you remember how valuable that is, the obstacles seem smaller.
· Trust God’s Power: No matter how tough the enemy or the hindrances, God’s power is greater. Lean on Him, not just yourself.
The Value of God’s Presence
Remember, nothing compares to the peace, joy, and fulfillment that comes from being close to God. The challenges and obstacles just show how important and precious that relationship is. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels like the world is pulling us in every direction except toward God. But with determination, faith, and help from God, every obstacle can be overcome.
God’s presence is for those who truly want it—who are willing to fight the good fight, give up distractions, and pursue Him with all their hearts. The journey may be difficult, but the reward is worth every step.
Conclusion
If you find yourself longing for God but feeling blocked by difficulties, remember that everyone faces hindrances. The path is not easy, but it is possible. Start by paying attention, asking for help, and keeping your eyes on the goal. The obstacles you meet only make the destination more precious. God is waiting for you, and with His help, no hindrance is too great. Keep pressing on, and you will find His presence—your greatest reward.
