Understanding the Most Important Thing in Life
What Were We Made For?
We were made to know God. This is the main reason we are here. The biggest goal we can have in life is to get to know God. When Jesus spoke about “eternal life,” he said it means knowing God, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom God sent (see John 17:3).
Why Is Knowing God So Important?
Knowing God is the best thing in life. It brings real joy, happiness, and contentment—more than anything else can. The Bible says we shouldn’t be proud of our knowledge, strength, or wealth, but if we want to be proud of something, it should be that we understand and know God (see Jeremiah 9:23-24).
God is most pleased when people want to know him. He values knowing him more than any offering or ritual (see Hosea 6:6).
What Difference Does It Make?
Once we realize our main purpose is to know God, life becomes clearer and our problems start to make sense. Many people struggle with feelings that life doesn’t matter or that nothing satisfies them. Christians, however, have a big goal that gives life meaning: getting to know God.
No goal is greater, more exciting, or more worthwhile than knowing God.
What Does “Knowing God” Really Mean?
Just saying we know God isn’t enough. It’s not about having a special feeling, chills, visions, or strange thoughts. Knowing God is deeper than just emotions or ideas.
Getting to Know Someone
Knowing a person is different from knowing about a thing or a place. To really know someone, you have to spend time with them, see how they act, and learn how they think. But knowing a person depends a lot on them opening up to you—sharing their thoughts and feelings. The same is true with God. We can only know God if God reveals himself to us.
If You Met Someone Important
Imagine meeting a famous person or leader. You wouldn’t expect to become their friend unless they chose to open up and share with you. If they did let you in, it would feel special and could change your life. That’s a little like what happens when God lets us get to know him.
How Do We Know God?
The Bible tells us God wants us to know him. God speaks to us through Scripture, teaching us about ourselves—our weaknesses and our need for forgiveness. But God also wants to make friends with us and invites us to work with him.
Knowing God means:
· Listening to God’s Word and letting it speak to us, personally.
· Learning about God’s character—who he is and what he is like—through what the Bible says and what God does.
· Accepting God’s invitations and following his commands.
· Recognizing and celebrating God’s love for us, because he wants us to be close to him.
Why Is This So Special?
It’s a huge privilege to be invited by God to know him and to work with him. Just as some people feel proud to serve an important leader, we can feel even more honored to know and serve the Creator of everything.
Conclusion
Knowing God isn’t just about feelings or facts. It’s about a real relationship. God offers us friendship and invites us to be part of his plans. When we respond, our lives become full of meaning and purpose. This is the greatest thing we can experience.
