A Layman’s Guide to the Influence of Speech and Why It Matters
Words are everywhere. Every day, we speak, listen, read, write — we’re surrounded by language. It’s so easy to overlook the impact our words have, but if you stop and really think about it, you’ll realize: words are powerful. They can build up or tear down, soothe or hurt, create new possibilities or shut doors. This simple truth is summed up in a phrase often heard in religious circles: “the power of the tongue.”
But what does this mean, really? Let’s break it down in plain language.
What Is “The Power of the Tongue”?
When people talk about the power of the tongue, they’re talking about the influence our words have on ourselves, our relationships, and even the world around us. Just as fire can warm a house or burn it down, words can encourage and heal — or damage and destroy.
It’s a concept rooted in ancient wisdom, especially in the Bible. The books of James and Proverbs, for example, often mention how speech can bring life or death, comfort or pain, and even shape how we see reality. The point is simple: words matter.
The Dual Nature of Speech
Let’s put it plainly: our words have two sides. They can help or they can hurt.
· Words can bring life or death: A kind sentence can lift someone’s spirits, offer hope, and inspire. On the flip side, a harsh remark can make a person feel worthless or alone. Think about a time someone encouraged you — how did it feel? Now, remember a time when words wounded you. That’s the power we’re talking about.
· Words build or destroy: Gracious speech can create understanding, heal old wounds, and strengthen bonds. Careless or negative speech, however, can spark arguments, create confusion, and leave emotional scars.
· Language shapes reality: The words we choose act as a filter through which we see the world. Say something enough times, and it can become true for you — or for those who hear you. If you constantly tell a child they’re smart, they start believing it. If you tell someone they’re a failure, they may lose confidence and give up.
Biblical Wisdom: What Does the Bible Say?
The Bible is full of advice about words. Here are three key passages — and what they mean in ordinary terms.
Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
