Understanding Spiritual Truth in Simple Terms
The Mystery of God’s Deep Things
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have a special understanding of God’s ways, while others find it confusing or even foolish? The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 that there are things God has prepared for those who love Him—things so wonderful that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has imagined. But God doesn’t keep these things secret forever; instead, He reveals them to us through His Spirit, the Holy Ghost.
How Does the Spirit Reveal?
This revealing doesn’t happen in some distant future or only in heaven. Paul says God has already revealed these deep things to us by His Spirit, here and now. What does this mean? It means that God’s Spirit, the Holy Ghost, helps people understand truths about God and His plans that we could never figure out on our own. Without the Holy Ghost, even the wisest and most educated person won’t truly grasp God’s ways.
The Difference Between Natural and Spiritual People
Let’s look at verse 14 of 1 Corinthians 2: “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” This tells us there are two kinds of people in the world:
· The Natural Person: Lives by human senses, intelligence, and worldly wisdom. To them, spiritual things seem silly or confusing. They might hear about miracles, the work of the Holy Spirit, or God’s love, and think it’s all excitement, imagination, or nonsense.
· The Spiritual Person: Is born of God, walks in the Spirit, and is open to the deep things God wants to show. They don’t rely just on their own understanding but let the Holy Ghost guide and teach them.
God’s truth is not just about intellect, science, or cleverness. Spiritual things are only understood through spiritual means. This is why so many people can read the same Bible but have such different reactions to it—some feel God’s presence and understand His love, while others just see words and stories.
Two Kinds of Wisdom
The Bible also talks about two kinds of wisdom:
· Worldly Wisdom: Focuses on human achievement, knowledge, and reasoning. According to God, this kind of wisdom is limited. It can’t imagine the amazing things God has prepared for His people.
· Heavenly Wisdom: Comes from God and is given by the Spirit. It helps us understand what God wants for us and what He has already prepared.
God has already prepared good things for those who love Him. He has already revealed them to believers by His Spirit.
The Work of the Holy Ghost
The Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, is God’s gift to His people. When someone receives the Holy Ghost, it’s like getting a new set of eyes and ears for spiritual things—a way to see and hear what God is saying, which isn’t possible by human effort alone.
The Spirit leads believers into deeper understanding, into spiritual gifts, and into a closer relationship with God. The Spirit helps guide, comfort, and teach. Through the Holy Ghost, people can experience the “deep things of God”—meaning, they get insight into God’s heart, His plans, and His truth.
Why Some Don’t Understand
There will always be two reactions to spiritual things. When the Holy Ghost is poured out, some people accept it with joy and faith, while others pull back, not willing to change or be seen as different. Some might even mock or despise it. The Bible warns that those who continually reject the Spirit miss out on the good things God has for them.
Different Spirits in the World
The Bible says there are many spirits and kinds of power in the world, and we should be careful to “try the spirits”—meaning, check if they are truly from God. Not every spiritual experience or display of power comes from the Holy Ghost. Some are human, emotional, or even deceptive.
As the Bible says: “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” The Spirit leads people to truth, to baptism in the Holy Ghost, and to the gifts that God wants to give. When Jesus promised the Holy Ghost, He said the Spirit would stay with us forever and lead us into all truth.
Counterfeit Powers and True Power
Throughout history, whenever God’s power is working, there are always counterfeits—spiritual powers that try to mimic God but are not genuine. This happened in the time of Moses. When Moses performed miracles before Pharaoh, Egyptian magicians did similar things. But only Moses’ miracles were of God. In the end, God’s power triumphed; Moses’ serpent swallowed up the magicians’ serpents.
The lesson: God’s genuine power will always win over counterfeit powers. The devil tries to deceive, but where there is a fake, there must be something real to imitate. So, the existence of counterfeits proves that God’s Spirit and power are genuine.
Christ’s Sacrifice and the Coming of the Holy Ghost
Why did Jesus come to earth? He left His glory, came down and lived a humble life, suffered, and died so that God’s plan could be fulfilled. If Jesus hadn’t gone to the cross and risen from the dead, the Holy Ghost could not have come. When Jesus ascended to heaven, God sent the Holy Ghost to live in His people.
The Power of the Holy Ghost
The Holy Ghost is described in powerful ways: as wind, water, and fire. These are forces that can destroy, but also bring life and change. At Pentecost, the Holy Ghost came like a rushing wind and tongues of fire. These images show how mighty and life-changing the Spirit is. The Holy Ghost fills believers with God’s glory, majesty, and power.
Sometimes, the sense of God’s glory is so strong, people can’t even stand; it overwhelms. Throughout the Bible, people who got a glimpse of God’s glory often fell to the ground in awe.
Standing Firm in Faith
There will be challenges. In the last days, some will try to deny God’s power and work against those who follow Christ, just as magicians opposed Moses. But the Lamb of God, Jesus, never lost His power and never will. Followers of Jesus must stand their ground, trusting that God’s power is greater than anything the devil or the world can offer.
