Growing up in a Baptist church, I was taught about salvation and baptism but knew little about the righteousness of God. It wasn’t until adulthood that I began to encounter Him in profound and transformative ways. This awakening revealed to me the full benefits of salvation and the profound truth that righteousness is not merely about outward behavior but about a heart aligned with God’s will.
As a young adult, I led a life that was far from righteous. Immersed in worldly pursuits, I lacked knowledge of the spiritual realm and the supernatural work of God in my life. However, God, in His infinite grace, began to draw me closer through the teaching of His Word. As Romans 10:14 aptly puts it, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Through hearing and studying the Word, I encountered the Holy Spirit in a way that unveiled my true self before God and revealed the transformative power of His righteousness.
The Christian Life: A Supernatural Walk
The Christian life is inherently supernatural. It cannot be sustained by human effort alone but requires the continual guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16 exhorts believers to “…walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” This verse highlights the dynamic relationship between the believer and the Spirit in the pursuit of righteousness. Learning to walk in the Spirit and practicing righteousness became integral to my spiritual growth. I came to understand that in Christ, I am a new creation, and the past no longer defines me. Moreover, if I stumble, I have an Advocate with the Father: Jesus Christ the Righteous.
What Does It Mean to Pursue Righteousness?
Righteousness is a multifaceted concept that encompasses ethical behavior, spiritual integrity, and alignment with God’s standards. In the Hebrew Bible, righteousness is often paired with justice, as seen in Psalm 89:14: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” This pairing underscores that righteousness is not only about personal morality but also about contributing to a just and equitable society.
To pursue righteousness is to seek what is right in the eyes of the Lord. Philippians 2:15 (AMP) encourages believers to “prove yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish in the midst of a perverted generation.” This exhortation calls Christians to stand firm in their faith, demonstrating purity and integrity in a world that often opposes godly values.
Righteousness is also one of the chief attributes of God, as portrayed in scripture. The Apostle Paul frequently emphasizes righteousness as behavior that pleases God, citing it in various contexts (e.g., Rom. 6:13, 2 Cor. 6:7, Eph. 4:24, 1 Tim. 6:11). Faith in Jesus Christ enables believers to receive the righteousness of God as a free gift. This divine righteousness is not earned through human effort but is bestowed upon us through faith.
Practical Steps in Pursuing Righteousness
To pursue righteousness, believers must first acknowledge their inability to achieve it through their own efforts. Romans 8:8 reminds us, “Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.” Instead, Christians are called to turn to God’s mercy and seek His transformative power to renew their minds (Rom. 12:2) and conform them to the image of His Son (Rom. 8:29).
