Unity and Justice: Revisiting Our National Story

As a nation, we need a new story. One that truly reflects who we say we are. We call ourselves the land of the free, home of the brave. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We say we are a Christian nation, but are we really living up to that? It’s time to take a hard look at ourselves and make sure our actions match our words. Let’s work together to create a story where everyone is treated fairly and has the opportunity to succeed. It’s not just about saying the right things, it’s about doing the right things. Let’s make our story one we can all be proud of.

The Bible teaches that God, not nations, is sovereign over national borders, yet nations have a real purpose. God is sovereign over all nations, with plans for each, but also judges them for their actions and promises to bless those who serve Him (Ps. 47:8, Prov. 21:1, Isa. 40:17). While some passages speak of God’s judgment on nations that oppose Him, others emphasize a future where all nations are unified in worship of God through Jesus Christ. The Great Commission also directs believers to make disciples from all nations, highlighting a spiritual emphasis on individuals from every people group.

God’s Sovereignty and Purpose for Nations

Divine Authority: The Bible consistently portrays God as the ultimate ruler of all nations and kingdoms, setting times and boundaries for them. He uses various nations to fulfill His purposes.

Judgment and Blessing: Nations that serve the Lord are blessed, while those that refuse to serve Him will perish. God holds nations accountable for their conduct, pouring out judgment on those who act unjustly.

A Future for All: The prophetic books, like Isaiah and Daniel, foretell a future time when God will establish His kingdom, a kingdom that will crush and end all existing empires and endure forever. In this future, all nations and peoples will serve Christ.

Israel and the Nations

A Special People: God chose the nation of Israel, setting it apart for a specific purpose related to the coming of the Messiah.

A Blessing to Others: The Abrahamic covenant promises that “all the families of the earth shall be blessed” through Abraham’s descendants, which ultimately refers to the redemptive work of Christ.

The Role of Christians and the Nations

The Great Commission: Jesus commanded his followers to “make disciples of all nations,” meaning to spread the gospel to all peoples and individuals within every nation.

Unity in Christ: The future of humanity involves a “great multitude” from “every nation, tribe, people and language” standing before God. This suggests a future where human diversity exists but is unified in Christ, transcending national boundaries.
