How Division Harms the Church: Recognizing Distraction

Understanding the Enemy’s Devices in Simple Terms

If you’ve ever wondered why churches sometimes struggle with arguments about race, religion, or politics, you’re not alone. According to Christian teachings, Satan is always looking for ways to trip up believers and weaken the Church. Let’s break down, in plain language, how Satan uses these hot-button issues to set traps—and what we can do to avoid them.

Satan’s Playbook: Divide and Distract

One of the oldest tricks in the book is to divide people. Satan knows that when the Church is united, it’s strong and effective. But when there’s division, it’s easy for confusion, bitterness, and distrust to slip in. Topics like race, religion, and politics are powerful because they touch on our deepest beliefs and identities.

Using Race

Race is a big part of who we are, but Satan tries to use our differences against us. Instead of celebrating diversity as a gift from God, he tricks people into seeing others as “us” versus “them.” This can lead to misunderstandings, prejudice, and even anger or hatred—none of which belong in the Church. When churches divide along racial lines, Satan wins because the Church loses its witness of God’s love for all people.

Using Religion

Even within Christianity, there are different traditions and opinions. Satan likes to stir up arguments over doctrine, worship styles, or church customs. What starts as a simple disagreement can quickly become a source of division. People may judge others for not worshipping “the right way” or believing exactly the same thing. This keeps the focus off of loving God and each other, and instead strengthens pride and stubbornness.

Using Politics

Politics can be especially tricky. Satan knows political debates can get heated and personal. Instead of discussing policies with respect, believers might start seeing their political views as “God’s only way,” and anyone who disagrees as an enemy. This leads to fights, broken friendships, and a distracted church that’s focused more on winning arguments than loving people.

Why Does Satan Do This?

The goal is distraction and destruction. When the Church is busy arguing about race, religion, or politics, it’s not focusing on its real mission: loving God, loving neighbors, and sharing hope with the world. Division makes the Church weaker and less attractive to those who are looking for hope and unity.

How to Avoid These Traps

·      Know the Truth: Read the Bible and let its message guide you. Don’t just believe rumors or opinions—seek out what God actually says.

·      Stay United: Remember, unity doesn’t mean agreeing on everything. It means loving each other, even when we disagree.

·      Put on the Armor of God: Ephesians 6 talks about putting on spiritual armor—like truth, faith, and righteousness—to stand strong against Satan’s tricks.

·      Be Humble and Forgiving: When someone offends you, forgive quickly. Don’t let offense or unforgiveness grow into bitterness.

·      Keep Your Focus: Remember the real mission of the Church. Don’t get distracted by endless debates or let differences divide you from fellow believers.

·      Pray for Wisdom: Ask God to help you spot traps before you fall into them and to give you wisdom to respond with grace.

The Bottom Line

Race, religion, and politics are important, but they should never become stumbling blocks that keep the Church from being the loving, united family God intended. When we recognize Satan’s tactics, we can resist them—by focusing on God’s truth, loving one another, and keeping our eyes on what really matters.
