“Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago” (Isaiah 43:18b GNTD)
Do you ever feel stuck in your spiritual journey? Perhaps you feel as though you’ve plateaued, going through the same motions without moving closer to the divine purpose God has planned for you. If this resonates with you, take heart—you’re not alone, and the path forward is possible.
To grow spiritually, one must first understand the feeling of being “stuck.” This state often involves a combination of helplessness, entrapment, and lack of motivation. However, with intentional efforts and the guidance of God’s Word, you can break free and step toward a more mature faith. Below are some steps to help you train your spirit and press onward in your spiritual growth.
Step 1: Acknowledge and Embrace the Journey
The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals who faced challenges yet pressed onward with faith. The apostle Paul is one such example. In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul declared, “I forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal. I want to win the prize that God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s journey was not one of perfection but one of perseverance. Similarly, growth begins by acknowledging that the journey is ongoing and that every step forward brings you closer to God.
Step 2: Develop a Well-Orchestrated Spiritual Training Plan
Just as athletes prepare for competition through rigorous training, believers are called to train themselves in godliness. Paul instructed Timothy, “Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is of some value. Yet, godliness has value for all things. It holds promise for both the current life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7-8). This training involves regular spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, worship, and service.
Begin by identifying areas where you feel spiritually stagnant and commit to practices that challenge and inspire growth. For example:
· Devote time each day to prayer and meditation on Scripture.
· Join a small group or Bible study to foster accountability and encouragement.
· Serve others in your community as an expression of Christ’s love.
Step 3: Know Your Identity in Christ
A significant barrier to spiritual growth is a lack of understanding of who you are in Christ. Many Christians struggle to move forward because they seek identity through societal standards rather than God’s truth. Genesis 1:27 reminds us, “God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them.”
Your identity as a believer is rooted in being chosen, loved, and set apart by God. As 1 Peter 2:9 declares, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.” Embrace this truth, and let it shape your thoughts, actions, and purpose.
Step 4: Press Toward the Goal
Moving ahead in your faith journey requires intentionality and resolve. Paul’s metaphor of a runner striving toward a finish line illustrates the effort and focus needed to grow spiritually. This doesn’t mean striving in your own strength but rather partnering with God and relying on His power to sustain you.
Let go of past failures or disappointments that weigh you down. As Isaiah 43:18b encourages, “Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago.” Fix your eyes on Jesus and the eternal promises that come with living a life surrendered to Him.
Step 5: Cultivate Strength and Stamina
Just as physical training builds endurance, spiritual growth requires strength and stamina that come from consistent effort. Engage in practices that nourish your spirit, such as fasting, journaling, and reflecting on God’s faithfulness. Surround yourself with a community of believers who encourage and challenge you to keep growing.
Growth is not always quick or easy, but the rewards are worth it. As you deepen your relationship with God, you will experience a greater sense of purpose, peace, and joy in this life, along with eternal rewards in the life to come.
Conclusion
Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey that requires dedication, discipline, and trust in God’s plan. By acknowledging where you are, training yourself in godliness, embracing your identity in Christ, pressing onward, and cultivating spiritual stamina, you can overcome the feeling of being stuck and experience the abundant life God has for you.
So, take that first step today. God is ready to guide you into deeper fellowship with Him. The path forward is full of promise, purpose, and the opportunity to reflect His light to the world.
