It is no secret that the church today faces an identity crisis. Many believers struggle to understand who they are in Christ and what it means to belong to God’s holy people. In Hebrews 6:3, the writer expresses a desire to move beyond the basics, urging the church to mature and grasp deeper truths. This longing is echoed in our time, as we seek clarity and conviction about our identity and calling.
“God permitting, we will do so.” (Hebrews 6:3)
Biblical Foundation: Growing Beyond the Basics (Hebrews 6:1-8)
Hebrews 6:1-8 challenges us to leave behind elementary teachings and press on toward maturity. The passage warns against stagnation and superficial faith, contrasting those who bear fruit with those who fall away.
“So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding.” (Hebrews 6:1)
Here, the difference between nominal Christians—those who profess faith but lack transformation—and true Christians becomes clear. True believers are marked by growth, spiritual fruit, and perseverance. God’s call is not just to believe in Him, but to become saints—set apart for His purpose, reflecting His holiness in our daily lives.
Paul’s Prayer: Embracing Our Identity in Christ (Ephesians 1:17-20)
Paul’s prayer for the church in Ephesians 1:17-20 is a beautiful expression of his desire that believers truly know God and understand their identity. He prays for “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation,” so that we might grasp the hope, riches, and power available to us as God’s people.
This passage reminds us that our identity is rooted not in what we do, but in what Christ has done. We are called saints—not because of our perfection, but because of His grace. Paul’s words reinforce our status as God’s inheritance and the recipients of His mighty power. Understanding this truth transforms how we live, worship, and serve.
Personal Reflection: Learning and Growing in Our Identity
My journey as a believer has been shaped by moments of doubt and discovery. Like many, I have wrestled with questions about my worth and purpose. But the more I meditate on Scripture and seek the Spirit’s guidance, the more I realize that my identity is secure in Christ. Spiritual growth is a lifelong process. It requires honest reflection, community, and a willingness to let go of old patterns. As we mature, we experience greater intimacy with God and clarity about our calling.
Purpose and Destiny: God’s Plans for His Church
God’s purpose is not just for individual saints, but for the whole church. We are equipped for ministry, called to be salt and light in the world, and destined to reflect God’s glory. Ephesians reminds us that we are His handiwork, created for good works which He prepared in advance for us to do. Our destiny is to participate in God’s mission, to disciple nations, and to build up one another in love and truth.
Call to Action: Pursue Your Calling and Purpose in Christ
Today, I urge you: do not settle for a nominal faith. Seek God’s revelation, trust His promises, and pursue your calling as a saint. Let the Spirit lead you into deeper understanding and greater maturity. Be courageous—step out in faith, serve others, and let your life bear fruit. The world needs the church to rise up in its true identity, united in purpose and love.
