Righteousness Over Appearance: Seeing Beyond the Façade

Understanding Our True Value Through God’s Eyes

Made in the Image of God

According to Genesis 1:27, every person is created in the image of God. This means that our worth doesn’t come from how we look or what we have, but from the fact that God designed us with intention and love. This image is not about physical traits—it’s about our soul, our ability to think, love, and make choices. Originally, humans were created with a pure heart, a clear understanding of what is good, and a natural desire to do what’s right. But over time, this image has become marred, or damaged, by our mistakes and the brokenness of the world. Even so, God’s desire is to renew this image within us by His grace.

Façade: The Masks We Wear

It’s easy for people to focus on outward appearances. We often judge others—and ourselves—based on what we see: height, looks, clothes, race or status. Sometimes, we even put on a façade, which is like a mask or a front, to hide our true selves. We might pretend to be happy or confident when we’re struggling inside. But just because someone seems to have it all together on the outside doesn’t mean that’s their reality. A façade can hide pain, fear, or insecurity.

Marred: When the Image is Damaged

The Bible tells us that while we were created in God’s image, this image has been marred over time. Our thoughts, desires, and actions can stray from what God intended. Instead of living with love, wisdom, and kindness, we find ourselves battling selfishness, anger, or jealousy. But the good news is that God wants to restore us. Through His grace, He can fix what’s broken inside us and help us become more like Him again.

Righteousness Over Appearance

People tend to judge character and worth based on outward appearance. If someone is tall, attractive, or well-dressed, we might think highly of them, especially when choosing leaders. But God is different. He sees what’s inside our hearts. He knows our true character—the thoughts and intentions we keep hidden. In 1 Samuel 16:7, God tells us not to focus on outward appearance, but on the heart. This means that what matters most to God is not how we look, but who we are on the inside. He values faith, love, and integrity far more than looks or status.

Breaking Free from Superficial Judgments

We all struggle with judging by appearances, whether it’s how we see ourselves or others. But the Bible encourages us to look deeper, beyond the façade. Real worth isn’t found in what we wear or how we look—it’s found in our relationship with God and the character He shapes in us. Let’s strive to see ourselves and others as God does, focusing on the heart rather than the outside. By doing this, we honor the image of God in everyone and open ourselves to true connection, understanding, and love.

Reflection

·      Think about times you’ve put on a façade. What were you trying to hide?

·      How can you learn to value people for their hearts instead of their looks?

·      Are there areas in your life where you feel marred? Ask God to help restore His image in you.

·      Remember, righteousness—living rightly and with love—matters far more than appearance.

Let’s look past the surface and seek the deeper beauty God sees in each of us.
