Finding True Beauty: Aligning Your Will with God

A Personal Reflection on Spiritual Growth and Finding True Beauty

Introduction: Everyday Struggles in Discerning God’s Will

Every morning, I wake up with plans, dreams, and expectations for how my day will unfold. Yet, there’s often a quiet tug in my heart—a sense that my own will and God’s will aren’t always in perfect alignment. Navigating this tension is a daily experience, not just for myself, but for many Christian women and anyone seeking a deeper faith. Questions like “Am I following God’s path or just my own ambitions?” or “How do I know if this is truly what God wants for me?” echo in our minds. These struggles can feel overwhelming, but they’re also an invitation to discover the beauty and purpose found in trusting God’s guidance.

Biblical Foundation: Remaining in Christ

God’s Word reassures us that we are not meant to figure out life on our own. Jesus said in John 15:15, “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” This verse reminds us that God desires a close, personal relationship, offering wisdom and direction as a loving friend.

Further, in John 6:38, Jesus reveals His attitude toward God’s will: “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” Jesus Himself modeled surrender to God’s purpose, showing that true fulfillment and beauty begin when we align our lives with Him.

Why Our Own Wisdom Falls Short

It’s tempting to rely on our own understanding, especially when faced with tough decisions or when life seems uncertain. But personal wisdom, no matter how educated or experienced, is limited. We see only a small piece of the puzzle, while God sees the whole picture. The Bible cautions us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). When we chase after our own plans, we often miss the deeper joy, peace, and beauty that God’s will brings.

Finding Direction: Bible, Prayer, and the Holy Spirit

So how do we seek God’s will? The most practical approach is to spend time in the Bible, in prayer, and listening to the Holy Spirit. The Bible is God’s love letter and roadmap, offering wisdom for every season of life. Prayer is where we lay our hopes, fears, and questions before God, inviting Him to guide our thoughts and decisions. The Holy Spirit helps us discern, nudging us toward choices that reflect God’s heart rather than our own impulses.

1.        Read the Bible regularly: Even a short passage can bring clarity or comfort.

2.        Pray honestly: Share your struggles and ask God for direction. Be open to His leading, even if it looks different from your plans.

3.        Listen for the Holy Spirit: Pay attention to that gentle conviction or peace that comes when God is confirming His way.

Adjusting Life to God’s Will: Jesus as Our Example

Jesus didn’t just teach about God’s will—He lived it. He set aside personal desires, staying focused on the purpose God gave Him. When we choose to adjust our lives to God’s direction, even if it means letting go of comfort or control, we begin to reflect Christ. Sometimes this means making difficult choices, trusting that God’s plan is better than ours. Our true beauty and value are revealed when we allow God to shape our journey, rather than forcing our own way.

Being a ‘Work in Progress’: Growth and Maturity

None of us walk this path perfectly. We are all works in progress, learning to surrender, trust, and follow. Spiritual growth is not about flawless obedience—it’s about willingness to grow, to receive grace, and to try again. The beauty of God’s will is that it leads us step by step, drawing out our unique gifts and calling. Each day is a chance to become more like Jesus, and to embrace the purpose He has for us.

Conclusion: Embracing Your Unique Purpose in Christ

God’s will isn’t a rigid set of rules—it’s a loving invitation to live with meaning and joy. When we lay down our own will and seek His, we find direction and true beauty. Whether you’re facing a big decision or simply feeling lost, remember that God wants to walk beside you, guiding you gently. Embrace your journey, knowing you are a work in progress, and your unique purpose in Christ is unfolding every day.
