The Danger of Assuming God Approves Our Biases

Challenging the Misconception That God Endorses Our Prejudices

In today’s world, it’s easy to see people acting as if God is on their side—especially when it comes to religion, race, or politics. But believing that God automatically supports our personal views and actions, no matter how misguided, is a dangerous mistake.

Misusing Faith for Personal Agendas

All too often, people use religion as a stamp of approval for their own ideas, even when those ideas are unfair or hurtful. They may argue that their beliefs are “God’s will,” but in reality, these actions can stray far from the true teachings found in religious texts. It’s important to remember that claiming divine backing doesn’t make our choices right, especially if those choices promote division or injustice.

Prejudice and Bias: Not God’s Way

Throughout history, we have seen people use God’s name to justify discrimination—against other races, religions, or political groups. This isn’t just wrong; it’s a complete misunderstanding of what most faiths actually teach. The core messages found in the Bible and many other sacred writings are about love, compassion, and treating others as we want to be treated. Using God as an excuse for prejudice goes against these basic principles.

Politics and the Divine: A Risky Mix

Mixing politics and religion can be especially tricky. When people claim their political party or policy is the only “godly” choice, they close themselves off to understanding and compassion. God doesn’t belong to any one party or nation. No political platform perfectly reflects the values of justice, mercy, and humility that many faiths call us to embrace.

A Call for Humility and Reflection

Instead of assuming God agrees with everything we think or do, we should approach our beliefs with humility. We all have biases and blind spots. Recognizing that none of us has a monopoly on truth is the first step toward real spiritual growth. Before using God’s name to defend our positions, we should ask ourselves: are our actions truly loving, just, and fair? If not, it’s time to reconsider.

In the end, it’s not about convincing others that God is on our side. It’s about striving to be on the side of love, justice, and understanding—the values that form the heart of most faith traditions. Let’s stop mistaking our own opinions for God’s will, and start working toward a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
