Understanding Our Purpose as the Church in Everyday Life
Many people today are talking about faith, church, and politics. It’s easy to get caught up in heated debates, feeling like we have to “pick sides” or defend our faith by supporting certain political causes. But let’s pause for a moment and remember what God actually calls the church to be.
Our True Calling: Salt and Light
When Jesus spoke to His followers, He said, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.” What does that mean in everyday language? Salt brings out flavor and preserves what is good. Light helps people see and find their way. In other words, Christians are called to make the world a better place — to show kindness, stand up for what’s right, and help others see the love and truth of God through our words and actions.
Witnesses, Not Weapons
God wants the church to be His witnesses — people who share His love, hope, and truth with others. This doesn’t mean we should be used as tools in political fights or be divided by arguments over who’s “right” or “wrong.” When faith becomes just another piece in a political game, it can hurt people instead of helping them. Instead of bringing healing and unity, it can cause division and pain.
Faith Above Politics
It’s important to remember that our beliefs are meant to change lives for the better, not to be used as excuses for hurting others or tearing our communities apart. True Christian faith should bring people together, encourage compassion, and help us build a more loving and just society. We shouldn’t let politics use our faith as a way to divide us or distract us from what really matters: loving God and loving our neighbors.
How Do We Live This Out?
· Show kindness: Treat everyone with respect, whether or not you agree with them.
· Stand for truth: Be honest, fair, and stand up for what is right, even when it’s hard.
· Help those in need: Look for ways to serve and support people around you.
· Be a peacemaker: Work toward understanding and unity, not division and conflict.
Let’s choose to be salt and light — making the world a better, brighter place by living out the love, truth, and hope that God has given us. Let’s refuse to be political pawns or let our faith be twisted for purposes that divide and destroy. We are called to be witnesses, not weapons. Let’s remember our true purpose and live it out every day.
