The Bible’s Message: Jesus as the Son of God

Understanding Key Scriptures and What They Mean for Believers

Introduction

If you’ve ever wondered why Christians refer to Jesus as the “Son of God,” you’re not alone. This title is found throughout the Bible and is central to the Christian faith. Let’s break down what this means with some straightforward examples from the Bible, so anyone can understand.

Old Testament Prophecy: Looking Forward to Jesus

Long before Jesus was born, the Old Testament pointed to a coming Savior. In Isaiah 9:6, it says, “For unto us a child is born… and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Christians believe this is a prophecy about Jesus, showing that he would be no ordinary person, but someone with a special relationship to God.

Jesus’ Baptism: A Voice from Heaven

One of the clearest moments showing Jesus as the Son of God happens when he is baptized. In Matthew 3:16-17, as Jesus comes up out of the water, a voice from heaven says, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This is a direct statement from God confirming Jesus’ unique identity.

The Angel’s Message to Mary

Before Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her that her child “shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). This message sets the tone right from the beginning, highlighting who Jesus would be.

Testimonies from Others Around Jesus

·      John the Baptist: After seeing Jesus, he said, “I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God” (John 1:34).

·      The Disciples: When Jesus walked on water, his disciples said, “Truly you are the Son of God!” (Matthew 14:33).

·      Simon Peter: He declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

The Gospel of John’s Purpose

The Gospel of John is clear that it was written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (John 20:31). So, the point of this book is to help people understand and believe in Jesus’ true identity.

Faith and Relationship with God

1 John 4:15 says, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” In simple terms, believing that Jesus is the Son of God is what connects people to God.

Jesus’ Own Words

When challenged by religious leaders, Jesus did not back down. In Matthew 26:63, the high priest asks him directly, “Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus replies, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” Here, Jesus himself confirms his identity.

Conclusion

To sum it up, calling Jesus the “Son of God” isn’t just a title—it’s a way of saying he has a special, divine relationship with God. The Bible backs this up in many ways: through prophecies, eyewitness accounts, and Jesus’ own words. That’s why this title is so important to Christians everywhere.
