What Does It Really Mean to Follow Jesus?

Understanding True Faith Beyond Personal Preferences

These days, it’s common for people to shape their idea of Jesus to fit their own opinions, lifestyles, or beliefs. Sometimes, we see Jesus portrayed as someone who always supports our personal choices or matches our preferred way of thinking. But when we do this, we risk missing out on who Jesus truly is.

Jesus Is More Than a Reflection of Ourselves

Many parts of Christian culture—like certain traditions, music, or even politics—are linked to Christianity, but they don’t always reflect what Jesus actually taught or did. In fact, not everything called “Christian” is necessarily about Jesus Himself. It’s easy to get caught up in the things surrounding Christianity and forget to focus on Jesus’ real identity and mission.

What Is True Faith?

True faith isn’t about making Jesus fit into our own image or preferences. Instead, it’s about learning who He really is and what He came to do. According to the Bible, Jesus’ identity is unique—He’s not just a good teacher or a friendly neighbor, but the Son of God who came to show us how to love, serve, and forgive. (Matt. 3:16-17). His mission was to bring hope, healing, deliverance and set the captives free, and a way for people to reconnect with God (Luke 4:18-19).

Why Does This Matter?

If our faith is based only on our own ideas of Jesus, it can be shaky and confusing. But if we look at Jesus as He truly is, our faith becomes stronger and more meaningful. It’s not about following a version of Jesus that we’re comfortable with—it’s about trusting who He really is and what He wants for our lives.

How Can We Know the Real Jesus?

·      Read His Story: Take time to read about Jesus in the Bible, especially in the books called the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). These give firsthand accounts of what He said and did.

·      Ask Honest Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions about Jesus and what He taught. That’s how we learn and grow.

·      Look for His Mission: Focus on what Jesus cared about—loving others, helping those in need, and standing for truth and justice.

At the end of the day, true faith rises and falls on Jesus’ identity and mission—not on our own version of Him. When we center our beliefs on the real Jesus, our faith has a solid foundation and lasting purpose.
