Why Our View of God Shapes Everything
When you hear the word “God,” what comes to mind? Is it a distant force, a loving Father, a judge, or a friend? Believe it or not, the way we think about God is one of the most important things about us. Our understanding of who God is doesn’t just affect our beliefs—it shapes how we live, how we worship, and even what we value most in life.
Why Knowing God Matters
Throughout the Bible, we are invited to know God deeply. In Colossians 3:10, it talks about walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God. This shows that knowing God isn’t just about head knowledge; it’s about letting that knowledge change how we live.
A famous Christian writer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” If we think of God as small, harsh, or uninterested, our worship and our lives will reflect that. But if we see God as loving, powerful, and close, it changes everything—from our daily choices to our deepest hopes.
Our Ideas of God Shape Our Worship
History shows that no group of people ever rises above their idea of God. In other words, the health and strength of a people’s faith depends on how great they believe God is. If we hold a high view of God, our worship will be sincere, passionate, and pure. If our view is small or distorted, our worship tends to be routine or even self-centered.
The Goal of Life: Knowing Christ
In Philippians 3, we find that those who have been truly changed by God—those who are “born again”—are set apart for God’s purpose. They worship in the Spirit and put their confidence in Jesus, not in their own achievements or status. The truth is, anything we accomplish on our own can’t compare to the joy and privilege of knowing Christ personally.
The things we once counted as important or as personal achievements fade in comparison to the purpose and meaning we find in Christ. Our old priorities become “loss”—not because they weren’t good, but because they simply don’t match the greatness of knowing God.
What Does This Mean for Us?
· Seek to Know God: Make it a priority to learn about God’s character through Scripture, prayer, and honest reflection.
· Let Your View of God Shape Your Life: As you grow in your understanding, let that picture of God change how you treat others, face challenges, and make decisions.
· Worship with Awe: Approach God with a sense of wonder and humility, remembering that He is far greater than anything we can imagine.
In the end, thinking rightly about God isn’t just a religious exercise. It’s the foundation for living a life full of meaning, hope, and true worship. The more we see God for who He truly is, the more our lives align with His purpose—and the more joy we discover in Him.
