Understanding How Division Hurts and How to Stay United in Faith
What Does “The Bait of Satan” Mean?
The phrase “the bait of Satan” was made popular by Christian author John Bevere. It is a way to describe how Christians can get tricked into holding grudges. They feel bitter or split into groups. In simple terms, it’s like a trap. It makes people focus on what makes them mad or different from others in their church. They focus on these differences instead of on what brings them together—love, forgiveness, and grace.
Division: A Problem for Every Christian
Throughout history, Christians of all backgrounds have faced division. Sometimes, differences in politics, culture, or traditions have caused misunderstandings. These differences have even left some people feeling left out. This goes against the message of Jesus. For example, in the past, some churches in the United States were divided by race. This was painful. It did not show Christ’s teaching about loving one another. These splits show the consequences of taking the bait. We let outside issues pull us apart. We should be united.
Why Is Division Still a Problem Today?
Even now, things like political debates, social media arguments, and cultural differences can lead Christians to judge each other. These factors can make them see other believers with suspicion. It’s easy to get caught up in arguments or feel separated from others. This separation makes it harder for Christians to come together. They struggle to serve their communities the way Jesus taught. All Christians, no matter their background, face the challenge of not letting these outside pressures divide them.
How Can Christians Avoid the Trap of Division?
- Forgive Quickly: Everyone gets offended sometimes, but choosing to forgive helps keep bitterness away.
- Make Peace: Try to fix broken relationships and talk openly when there are misunderstandings.
- Stay Humble: Admit that everyone has personal biases, and be willing to listen and learn from others.
- Focus on What Unites Us: Remember that being a follower of Christ is the most important thing, not our differences.
A Call for Unity
“The bait of Satan” is a strong reminder: division (whether about race, politics, or beliefs) weakens the Church’s mission. Every Christian is urged to reject division. This includes white conservative evangelicals and believers from all walks of life. They are encouraged to choose unity and love instead. This is how we show what God’s Kingdom looks like. It is a place where everyone matters. Everyone is welcomed. Everyone works together for a bigger purpose.
As the Apostle Paul wrote, “Let all bitterness, wrath, and anger be put away from you. Let clamor and slander be removed, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:31-32). Let this be our guide as we aim to resist division and show Christ’s love every day.
