Words Carry Spirits: Why What We Say Truly Matters

Understanding the Spiritual Power of Speech in Everyday Life

What Does “Words Carry Spirits” Mean?

Have you ever heard someone say, “Words carry spirits”? It sounds mysterious. Yet, it actually points to a powerful idea found in many religious and spiritual traditions. This is especially true in the Bible. The basic meaning is this: Words are not just sounds or letters. They have a spiritual force. What we say can bring life or death. It can create or destroy. It can deeply shape our emotions, attitudes, and even our reality.

The Spiritual Power of Words

In simple terms, words have real power. They can affect things we can’t see, like our hearts and spirits. When you encourage someone, you lift their spirit. When you gossip or lie, you can hurt someone deeply—sometimes even more than physical actions. The Bible often talks about the power of speech. For example, Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” In other words, our speech can bring about good or bad results for ourselves and others.

Words as Tools for Creation and Destruction

Think about how the Bible describes God creating the world: He spoke, and things came into existence. Our words also have the ability to “create” or “destroy.” That’s why saying “I forgive you” can heal relationships. It can even heal inner wounds. Hurtful words, on the other hand, can scar someone for years. Our words are like seeds—once spoken, they can grow into something much bigger, for better or worse.

Speech Reflects Who We Are

What we say reveals our true selves. Our speech can show kindness, love, and wisdom, or bitterness, anger, and negativity. Jesus also said, “People will give account for every careless word they speak. By your words, you will be justified. By your words, you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37). This means that our words matter not just to others, but also to ourselves—they show our inner spiritual state.

Life and Death in the Tongue

When we speak life—words of hope, encouragement, and blessing—we help build up those around us. But when we use our words for negativity, gossip, or lies, we spread destruction. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that what we say can either bring healing or harm. Ultimately, we experience the consequences of our words, whether good or bad. As the saying goes, “You reap what you sow.”

Practical Ways to Use Words Wisely

·      Be Mindful: Before you speak, text, or post online, ask yourself—will these words help or hurt?

·      Speak Life: Make an effort to encourage, bless, and build up others with your words.

·      Avoid Poison: Try not to use your speech for gossip, negativity, or tearing people down.

·      Practice Forgiveness: Saying “I forgive you” isn’t just for the other person—it can bring you peace, too.

·      Be Intentional: Realize that your words are powerful tools. Use them to align with goodness, truth, and love.

Why This Matters

Ultimately, the phrase “words carry spirits” is a reminder that our speech is never neutral. Every word has the power to build up or tear down, to heal or to harm. If we’re careful and intentional with how we communicate in person, through a text, or on social media, we can shape our world. Our careful communication can positively impact the lives of those around us. So, let’s choose our words wisely. They show who we are. Our words have the power to influence both ourselves and others in profound ways.
