Reflecting on Psalm 89:14 and Our National Values
We often hear the phrase “one nation under God” as part of our country’s identity, but have we ever stopped to ask what that truly means? It’s easy to say the words, but living up to them is much harder. If we claim to be under God, shouldn’t we care about what God actually expects of a nation and its people?
Justice and Righteousness: God’s True Standards
The Bible tells us that “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” (Psalm 89:14) In simple terms, this means that God’s rule is built on doing what is right and fair—treating others with kindness, standing up for the oppressed, and making sure everyone gets a fair shot at life.
What Does This Mean for Our Nation?
Saying we are a nation under God goes beyond reciting a motto or putting it on our money. It means we should strive to treat all our citizens with fairness, without favoritism or prejudice. Justice isn’t just about laws and courts—it’s about making sure our systems don’t leave people behind, and that everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
Righteousness is about more than just being good or religious; it’s about doing what is right, even when it’s hard. It means caring for those who are struggling, standing up for truth, and choosing love and faithfulness over selfishness and division.
Are We Living Up to God’s Expectations?
If we look honestly at our society, can we say we’re living up to these standards? Do all our citizens experience justice and fairness? Are our leaders and laws shaped by love and faithfulness, or are they sometimes driven by other motives?
Being “one nation under God” is a call to action. It challenges us to build a country where righteousness and justice aren’t just words, but the foundation of everything we do. When we treat each other with true fairness and compassion, we begin to reflect the kind of nation God would be proud of.
Let’s Walk the Talk
Let’s move beyond slogans and strive to truly understand and live out God’s ways. Justice, righteousness, love, and faithfulness—these are the values that should guide us, both as individuals and as a nation. Only then can we truly say we are “one nation under God.”
