Start Your Year with a Heartfelt Journey to Knowing God

Reflections for a Fresh Start in Faith

Introduction: Starting the New Year Right – The Importance of Reflection

As a new year begins, many of us set goals, make resolutions, and look for ways to grow and improve. While it’s wonderful to focus on our health, habits, or dreams, there’s an even deeper kind of growth that can change everything: growing in our knowledge of God. This kind of reflection isn’t just for pastors or scholars—it’s for anyone who wants a richer, more meaningful walk with God in the year ahead.

Knowing God: The Heart of the Christian Journey

At the core of the Christian life is a relationship with God. Knowing God isn’t just about facts or church attendance—it’s about getting to know Him as a real, loving, living presence in our lives. Imagine starting this year with the goal of deepening that relationship, making knowing God the foundation of every other resolution.

What Is God Like? – Exploring God’s Character

So, what is God really like? The Bible describes God as loving, just, merciful, and patient. He is powerful and wise, yet gentle and caring like a good father. God’s actions—creating the world, sending Jesus, offering forgiveness—show His heart for us. Learning about His names, like “Father,” “Shepherd,” or “Healer,” helps us see different sides of who He is. The more we discover about God’s character, the more we realize how trustworthy and wonderful He is.

What Does the Lord Require? – Faith, Trust, and Humility

God doesn’t ask us to be perfect; He asks us to trust Him. The Lord desires faith—a simple, honest belief that He is who He says He is. He calls us to walk humbly, to love others, and to listen to His voice. As we get to know God, we see that what He wants most is our hearts, our trust, and our willingness to be shaped by Him.

The Lifelong Journey: Growing in Faith and Understanding

Getting to know God isn’t a one-time event but a lifelong adventure. Some days we feel close to Him, other days we might have questions or doubts. That’s okay—God invites us to keep learning, asking, and growing. Over time, our faith deepens, and our understanding of Him grows clearer. This journey shapes us from the inside out.

Why Study God? – Expanding Hearts and Minds

It’s common to spend a lot of time “studying” ourselves—trying to understand our feelings, strengths, and weaknesses. While self-reflection is good, learning about God changes everything. When we focus on who He is, our perspective widens. We realize we are part of a bigger story. Thinking about God stretches our minds and humbles our hearts, reminding us that we don’t have all the answers, but we know the One who does.

Comfort in God: Healing, Peace, and Relief

Life brings challenges, pain, and uncertainty. Knowing God brings comfort like nothing else. He promises to be with us when we’re hurting, to bring healing to our wounds, and to offer peace that goes beyond our understanding. When we reflect on His character and actions, we find hope—even in the hardest moments.

Invitation: Begin the Journey This Year

As this new year unfolds, consider making your biggest goal to know God better. Read about Him, talk with Him in prayer, and look for ways to experience His love every day. Whether you’re just starting out or have walked with God for years, there is always more to discover. May your journey of faith lead you to deeper comfort, healing, peace, and joy—one step at a time.
