Walking as Children of Light and Confronting Darkness
Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” At first glance, this verse might sound pretty strong, but when you break it down, it actually gives us some practical advice on how we should live as followers of Christ.
Don’t Participate in Darkness
The first part of the verse tells us not to take part in “unfruitful works of darkness.” In regular terms, that means don’t get involved in things that are wrong or sinful. These might be actions that don’t lead to anything good—things that go against God’s ways, or even little temptations that most people might not think are a big deal. Whether it’s greed, gossip, or unhealthy desires, the Bible says these things don’t benefit us; instead, they can actually harm us and those around us.
Expose Evil by Living Differently
The second part of the verse says we should “expose” these works of darkness. This doesn’t mean we should go around pointing fingers or shaming people. Instead, it means showing a better way by how we live and, when the time is right, speaking up compassionately. When we choose to act honestly, show kindness, or stand up for what’s right, we shine a light that reveals the truth. Sometimes, simply living with integrity and love can be the strongest way to show others the difference between light and darkness.
The Power of Light
The verses that follow in Ephesians explain that when light shines on something, it becomes clear and is shown for what it really is. In other words, when we live in God’s truth, not only do we avoid being caught up in wrongdoing, but we also help others see what’s right and true. It’s not always easy to go against the crowd, but when we do, we reflect God’s love and help bring hope to those who might be lost or struggling.
Taking Sin Seriously
It’s easy to brush off certain behaviors or attitudes as “not that bad,” but Ephesians warns us not to make light of things that can actually poison our hearts or the hearts of others. Being greedy or obsessed with money, for example, can take our focus off God and lead us down a path that isn’t healthy for our souls. If we let ourselves get caught up in these things, we’re missing out on real joy and the peace that comes from trusting God.
Living as Children of Light
Because of God’s grace, any of us—no matter what we’ve done—can turn away from darkness and start walking in the light. When we choose to follow Jesus, we become “children of obedience,” and God’s anger is replaced with mercy. It’s important, then, not only to recognize what’s wrong but also to encourage others to make a change, just as the prophets and apostles did. Sometimes, this means lovingly challenging people who are stuck in patterns that hurt themselves or others, hoping they’ll find the light of Christ.
The Danger of Silent Approval
There are many ways people can end up supporting or excusing sin, even without meaning to—by staying silent, joining in, or cheering on bad behavior. If we don’t speak up or set a good example, we’re actually sharing in those actions. That’s why it’s important to lovingly reprove wrongs, not just for our sake, but for theirs too.
Conclusion: Shine Your Light
Ephesians 5:11 isn’t just about avoiding bad things; it’s about actively choosing to be a light in the world. When we live with honesty, compassion, and courage, we help reveal what’s true and good. As believers, let’s not be afraid to stand out and lovingly encourage others to come into the light, so that Christ can bring real hope and transformation to everyone.
