Reflections on Waiting, Trust, and the Dangers of Pride
Facing Doubts and Waiting on God
There are moments in life when we feel confused or even overwhelmed by doubts about how things are happening—why certain events unfold the way they do, or why answers to our prayers seem slow in coming. In these moments, it’s easy to feel impatient and frustrated, even tempted to give up hope or trust. But these are precisely the times when we need to be careful and watch out for impatience. Instead of letting doubts take over, we’re encouraged to continue trusting and waiting for God’s response.
How God Answers
When we bring our worries, complaints, and requests to God, it’s important to pay attention to the ways He might answer us. Answers can come through the words of Scripture, through a sense of peace or direction from the Holy Spirit, or through the events and circumstances in our lives. Even if the answer doesn’t come right away, we are encouraged to keep watching, listening, and waiting, because God promises not to disappoint those who genuinely look for His guidance.
The Promise of Faith
One of the most important truths is that God’s promises are for everyone. Even if the good things we hope for seem to be delayed for a long time, they will eventually arrive, and the wait will be worth it. The person who sincerely seeks God’s help—especially someone who is humble, regretful for past mistakes, and eager to change—can find comfort in these promises. Such a person rests their hope on God’s word and on Christ, through whom all blessings are given. Living by faith means trusting God, even when answers are slow, and continuing to do good and persevere, knowing that in the end, God will lift us up.
The Dangers of Pride
On the other hand, pride is described as the root of all problems. When someone is puffed up with pride, thinking they don’t need God or can manage life on their own, their heart isn’t truly right. Pride leads people away from God and keeps them from receiving His help and grace. It’s a deep-seated problem that makes the soul crooked, unable to stand firm or thrive. In fact, pride is the source of many forms of wrongdoing—oppression, rejection of God’s message, and all sorts of corruption. The proud person misses out on the life that comes from true faith.
Living by Faith, Not by Sight
The key message is that “the just shall live by faith.” This means that those who trust God—who rely on Him even when they can’t see the outcome—will find real life and happiness, both now and forever. Faith is not just for “super-spiritual” people or for those already living righteously; it’s for everyone who turns to God, whether they’re just starting out or have been on the journey for a long time. Faith is what begins, sustains, and strengthens our spiritual life. It’s not about being perfect or always knowing what’s coming next, but about being anchored in trust and hope in God.
Examples from the Bible
The Bible is full of stories showing the importance of faith. Abraham, for example, trusted God even when he didn’t see how things would work out, and his faith was counted as righteousness. The people of Israel had times when they believed and saw great things happen, but also times when they doubted and missed out on what God wanted for them. The message repeats again and again: trusting God leads to stability, blessing, and true life.
The Universal Truth of Faith
This idea isn’t just for one group of people—it’s a universal truth for everyone. The phrase “the just shall live by faith” applies to all, no matter background or circumstance. Faith is the foundation of spiritual life, bringing peace, strength, and joy even in hard times. It draws us close to God and keeps us going, even when we’re not sure of the outcome.
Conclusion: Choosing Faith over Pride
At the end of the day, the choice is clear: pride leads us away from God and emptiness, while faith draws us close to God and true life. Waiting patiently, trusting even when things don’t make sense, and staying humble—these are the things that help us receive God’s promises and live fully. In every circumstance, living by faith means holding on to hope, keeping our hearts open to God’s answers, and refusing to let impatience or pride take over.
