When the World Feels Unsteady, Lift Your Eyes to the Hills: Reflections on Psalm 121

Encouragement in Uncertain Times

Finding Light Beyond the Headlines

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains  where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth. My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Ps. 121-1-2)

Each morning, as I read the latest news—stories of unrest, hardship, and uncertainty—I often feel a heaviness in my spirit. The world’s troubles can be unsettling. It feels as though we, as a nation (people), have fallen so far into sin. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. Life overwhelms me at times. The familiar slips away. I search for reassurance. I look for something steady to hold onto.

The Invitation to Look Up

In those moments, Psalm 121 gently calls to me. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help come from?” It’s as if the ancient words are inviting me to pause and redirect my gaze. They encourage me to move beyond the pile of worries at my feet. I am prompted to look higher, towards hope. The answer is simple yet profound: “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” There’s comfort in knowing my struggles are not ignored by the one who shaped the stars and mountains.

Simple Wisdom for Everyday Struggles

·      Shifting Perspective: The Psalm urges me not to stay fixated on the problems swirling around me or the world. Instead, it reminds me to step back. I need to look up and remember there is a greater strength available. This strength transcends what I can see.

·      God’s Vigilance: The assurance that God is always awake and attentive is deeply comforting. I am never abandoned to face my fears alone; protection and care are promised, even when I feel most vulnerable.

·      Help without Limits: Since God is the creator of all, nothing is beyond reach or repair. Every anxiety, no matter its size or shape, can be entrusted to someone who is truly capable of helping.

Why Trusting God Brings Real Security

Life teaches me that even sincere promises from people or institutions can falter. Psalm 121 reminds me that my deepest security isn’t found in things that come and go. It is in a relationship with the one who is steadfast and nearby. Though circumstances may shift and the headlines may grow darker, I am never outside the watchful care of God.

Encouragement for the Journey

As I walk through uncertain days, I try to remember to “lift my eyes”—not just in longing, but in hope. Asking for help from God is not weakness, but an act of courage and faith. The Psalm’s message is clear. When I feel weighed down by all that is beyond my control, I look up and discover strength. I find protection and comfort that keeps me moving forward—no matter what life brings.
