The Journey Into the Mystery: Growing in the Knowledge of God

Discovering Wisdom, Revelation, and Deep Hunger for God

Have you ever read a verse in the Bible and felt like you only understood a small part of it? Maybe you’ve heard about “the mystery” mentioned in Scripture and wondered what that really means. For a long time, I thought I knew God just because I grew up in church. But as I look back, I see a journey—a path from a little bit of knowledge, to a deep hunger for more, and finally to experiencing God in ways I never imagined. Today, I want to reflect on this journey into the “mystery” of God, and how wisdom, revelation, and a hunger for understanding have transformed my faith.

What Does “The Mystery” Mean in the Bible?

When the Bible talks about “the mystery,” it isn’t talking about a riddle that’s impossible to solve. Instead, it’s about truths that were hidden for a time, but now revealed through Christ. Paul writes about it often, especially in Ephesians 3:4-6, where he says, “When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed…” Basically, God’s plan for us—His love, His grace, and our new identity in Christ—wasn’t always clear, but now, through Jesus and by the Holy Spirit, we’re invited to understand it.

My Personal Journey: From Church Kid to Spiritual Hunger

As a child, I attended church on Sundays with my grandmother. I also participated in Sunday School and vacation Bible School.  I knew the stories, memorized verses, and sang all the songs. However, as I grew older, I drifted away from the church. Over time, I began to sense that something important was lacking in my life. There was a disconnect between what I listened to and what I truly lived out.

There followed a period filled with personal and family challenges—a chapter defined by doubt, reflection, and searching for meaning. During these difficult times, the ties that bound them were put to the test, sometimes strained but never severed. Each day presented fresh obstacles—whether emotional, financial, or spiritual—that called for a deep well of perseverance, nurtured through faith in God and the steady guidance of my pastor and church family. Quiet moments of introspection, paired with the steadfast support of loved ones and church members, helped sustain us. The road was far from simple, but within the crucible of adversity, newfound strength, greater understanding, and a renewed sense of hope gradually took root.

The Power of Hunger: What Jesus Said

One verse that became real to me was Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Jesus wasn’t talking about just being a little interested—He spoke about a deep craving, like being truly hungry or thirsty. That’s what started to change my life. I began to ask, “God, I want to know You. Show me more.”

Scriptural Insights: Wisdom, Revelation, and Knowing God

The Bible is full of encouragement to seek wisdom and understanding. In Proverbs 2:3-5, it says, “If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding… then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Paul, in Ephesians 1:17, prays “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ… may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.” This isn’t just for Bible scholars—it’s for all of us!

I started to immerse myself in the Scriptures, not just to check off a reading plan, but to listen for God’s voice. Little by little, verses that once seemed confusing started to make sense. I saw God’s character, His love for me, and my identity as His child. The “mystery” became less about what I couldn’t know, and more about a treasure I was invited to discover.

Transformation: From Knowledge to Experience

As I kept seeking, something amazing happened. My faith became real. I began to experience God’s peace when I was anxious, His guidance when I was confused, and His presence in everyday moments. I realized that the more I sought wisdom and understanding, the more I discovered who I truly am in Christ—chosen, loved, forgiven, and empowered.

Colossians 2:2-3 sums it up beautifully: “…that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” The mystery isn’t meant to stay hidden. It’s meant to be explored with joy and expectation.

The Church’s Need: Wisdom and Revelation Today

I believe that today, more than ever, the Church—and that means you and me!—needs wisdom and revelation. We’re surrounded by information but starved for transformation. We need the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to what’s really true, to give us insight for our daily lives, and to help us see God’s heart for ourselves and the world.

Encouragement: Seeking God with All Your Heart

If you’re on this journey, or even just starting, take heart. God wants to reveal Himself to you. Ask Him for wisdom (James 1:5 says He gives generously!), spend time in His Word, and let your hunger lead you closer to Him. The “mystery” of God isn’t a secret to keep us out—it’s an invitation to know Him more deeply, to be changed, and to walk in the fullness of who He made you to be.

Keep seeking, keep asking, and let your journey be filled with discovery, wisdom, and the joy of knowing the God who loves you more than you can imagine.
